G.O.A.L.S.

I’m preparing myself for a future of global awareness at the Ohio State University. Currently, I am taking a Spanish class which is teaching me both about the language and the many difference cultures that are encompassed within the many Spanish speaking countries. I plan to continue learning and educating myself about these cultures by taking more Spanish specific classes and, eventually, studying abroad. As I continue at Ohio State I plan to gain a better understanding of other cultures.

Original inquiry is an important part of the college experience because it is one of the defining elements of any particular student. Many students at the Ohio State University will graduate with similar minors, majors, and even transcripts; however, the way that they choose to fulfill their own personal original inquiry- that they do some form of original inquiry- is what makes each student different and allows them to have unique experiences and first-hand knowledge that is valuable within any workforce. My plan to fulfill this goal is to become involved in undergraduate research. There are many options for research at OSU and by talking to experienced professors and other staff I will determine which opportunity is the best for me.

Academic enrichment is a vital part of attending university, and I plan to make sure that I create a schedule for myself and coursework that remains both challenging and relevant. As a biology major and pre-dental student, the biological sciences are both interesting to me academically and important in my future. Going forward I will prioritize these important class and ensure that I take higher level, rigorous course-work that will prepare me for my future career.

Leadership is not always something that comes in the form a specific role, but can be found in all parts of life. My goal to become an effective leader does not stop at being involved with the Arts and Sciences Student Council or the Pre-Dental club here at Ohio State. Instead, I plan to focus on displaying leadership qualities in every part of my stay here at OSU. Working two part time jobs in conjunction with one another has taught me that you do not have to be figure with the most authority to be a leader within and outside of the workplace. As an Office Assistant at the Bradley-Paterson front desk I have learned that always being available and willing to work with others is the most important part of true leadership. I plan to continue working with others in a professional environment and in every day life in order to refine my leadership skills and to become as helpful as possible to the people I encounter.

Currently I am involved in service projects that involve raising awareness and funds for abused animals and delivering food to the houses of senior citizens within my community. Both of these experiences have led me to meet people, and animals, that I otherwise might never have realized existed. Retired racehorses or horses with large medical bills may not appear to have much in common with the elderly folk that I work with; however, being involved in both of these projects has given me an awareness of what happens to beings whom society no longer finds a use for. People who cannot afford both to eat and pay for their spouses medical treatment are often forgotten about, especially if they have left the workforce, just as a prized mare becomes obsolete when she stops being able to jump quite as high. In the future I will continue to be involved in these service projects, and more that bring attention to those in my community who have worked hard and given back and in return are set to the sidelines when they are no longer “useful”. Service engagement is the most important of the OSU goals because the experiences gained through service do not just make a better student but a better citizen and member of society.
