Spring Project

For the Spring 2019 semester, I had to create Spring Project for my Architecture Scholars. The theme could have been anything I wanted to research and I chose to learn more about my interest in Landscape Architecture. I am proud of my project and glad to share it to community.

Journal #3: G.O.A.L.S Spring Semester Project

For my Architecture Scholars Program, we have a Spring Semester Project since there is not a class for the Spring Term. For this project, I can chose what I desire as long as it correlates within the G.O.A.L.S.

I have ideas of what I want to do my project on, but I am still sharpening it up little by little. For the Spring Semester Project, I wanted to do a project that correlates a little bit with landscape. I have recently gotten really intreasted with landscape and am uncertain if I want to change my career towards landscape architecture instead of architecture. With this project, I hope that it answers my question of changing my major or not. Also, I am hoping to hone my sketching skills.

My intended project was to sketch the landscape around and outside of campus. I would continue drawing the landscape for the duration of the Spring term. This  project would focus more on the development of trees and land and how it influences and highlights the surrounding area. Along side with this, I would compare it with landscape from North Carolina since I want to incorporate landscape that I have grown up with, with the landscape I am living with.

This project aligns with the G.O.A.L.S because it fits more with the Acadmic section since it would help me decide the career I will pursue.

To begin with this project, I would need to choose where and what time to draw the landscape. To do this, I would do research on different places on campus, parks surrounding the campus, and where I would like to draw from North Carolina. Since I have family and friends in North Carolina, I was hoping to ask them to take pictures for me, and I would sketch from the picture. Once, I have figured out where and what time I want to draw, I would compare the different sketches and analyze how they change and how they are similar. I would compare what there purpose is and why they were planted.

I am excited to see where this project will lead me and to widen my eyes towards the amount of landscape that highlights different areas.

Columbus to do list: The Roosevelt Coffee House

For the Columbus to do list, I went to the Roosevelt Coffee House. It was a coffee house that was located on 300 E Long St. in downtown Columbus.

It was kinda hidden from when I tried getting their. My roommate, my friend and I went to this place by bus. We then were on the bus for a small amount of time then had to get off and venture into the streets to find the coffee shop. Many streets and turns later, we found the location.

It was very beautiful and the wall was just filled with windows!!! I loved that it was very open and knew that this was a very unique place. When trying to get in, it was in an alley. The alley, however, wasn’t as creepy as movies may portray allies to be. This alley was customized so that the customers would enjoy their drinks outside if they so desired. It felt safe as well because there were cameras and the width of the alley was also a big enough for around 5 tables and chairs to reside in. It sorta remained myself of Palley Park in New York. They were both in allies and both were used for recreational use.

Once entering, I immediately noticed the cash register was extrudead outward at an angle. This was very odd since I have not seen this before but it was nice to see the difference in interior space.

I saw the different choices for coffee and realized that I haven’t really expanded my tastebuds on tea. I, personally, enjoy coffee more than tea but I was wanting to try tea as well. The different choices of tea they had made the choice to get tea even harder. There were so many teas that I haven’t tried since my personally favorite was black tea. My friend then quickly saw that they had jasmine tea. She was quick to say that it was a very good tea and I should order it to try it. If I did not like it then I could give it to her. Honesty, this did not sound like a bad idea so I then order the jasmine tea.  I personally, do not really know the difference of tea than coffee so forgive me for my way of describing the taste and smell.

The taste was very different. The color as well, was something I have not seen yet. It was a light green with a mixture of yellow.  The mixture made it look like it was peach. It looked like green tea but was not as peached color. The smell was also a scent that I cant really identify unless I would like to lead the readers astray. The scent and taste of the tea correlated together and made it very refreshing

The taste and color of the tea took a while to correlate together but in the end, I would order this drink again if I went there once again. The place was beautiful and would go there in the daytime to enjoy the sunshine with a cup of tea.

Columbus to do list: Stauf’s Coffee

I went to Stauf’s Coffee on November 17, 2018. Stauf’s coffee has three locations, and then one I went to was the one in North Market.

Since it was in the middle of a market, it stood out since it was the only coffee place in the entire market. To choose a cafe to reside in a market, I would have to think long and hard about what which cafe to choose. If Stauf’s coffee was chosen and it has three cafes, that must mean that they are very friendly and have very good coffee.

The facade of the small stand stood out. It had a strong exterior of the color black and steel. Since it was inside of a market, it had to stood out and did by being the only coffee shop. Also it was the only place with a strong smell of coffee.

For this place, I order the cappuccino as usual. Ordering the cappuccino, however, was pleasant. This was probably the only place so far that the cashier didn’t seem like he was bored or  not cheerful. He was very kind and would continue the conversation until it was time for the next customer. He would not only ask the customers day but also would describe the flavors or recommend drinks if the customer was undecided, which the person in front of me was. This really allowed the cafe to have a strong image of the entire company just by one small worker.

Once my cappuccino was ready, I looked at the art on top of the coffee. I was super happy! The art was just amazing and I did not want to mess it up by drinking it.

It was the best art I have seen so far and I was very disappointed when I had to mess it up. When trying to take my first sip of the coffee, it was just the foam on top. The foam was very thick that it took a while for myself to actually taste the coffee itself. I didn’t really like that the cup was filled with more foam then I was accustom to but, it was something that stood out more than the other places. Once I got to the first sip, it was extremely bitter. Very bitter that I had to add a packet of sugar. Although after that, I would continue happily drinking my coffee throughout the day.

I am glad that I went to this coffee shop because I enjoyed completely the art that the coffee had on the top my drink. I was hoping to see lots of art on top of the cappuccino, another reason why I chose to buy this drink at coffee shops, and was extremely glad that a shop actually did a very lovely job on it. I understand that it would depend on the person making the drink but with this being the first time at this cafe, it truly means a lot on forming my opinions on the different locations for coffee.

Would I come here again? When I visit North Market to buy anything, most likely I will buy a coffee to complete my order. I might something different if I go for taste but I am very willing to buy the drink for its art on the top.

Columbus to do List: Fox in the Snow Cafe

To continue with the theme of cafe and tea, I ventured toward German Village to try the coffee at The Fox in the Snow. It’s a coffee shop serving rustic style baked goods and hand poured drinks.

Once entering the shop, I did feel the industrial and rustic sense around the aroma of coffee being brew. The station was located in the center of the room and the seating area was placed around it. No matter where one sat, someone would have the ability to see how coffee was made. From seeing water being poured or the beans being ground, it was an interesting sight to see from the location where I ordered. If the shop wasn’t too far, I would have highly considered people watching at this location. The shop concluded a great number of windows for guest to look out into the streets.

The menu was not as diverse but it still contained a good amount of coffee choices one can choose from. This coffee shop is more diverse in their pastries than their coffee selections. I, myself, was not wanting to try their pastries but instead their cappuccino. I order my cappuccino to go since it was such a lovely day outside. A cup of coffee and walking around German Village sounded ideal and would lighten the day more. Now,  I would usually debate the prices of the selected coffee that it serves, but at this shop, I would consider their prices to be standard. Not too much but not too little.

Once my cappuccino was made and served, I immediately took off the cap. I notice that the art on the top wasn’t the best but I quickly remember that it was to go and it might be better if it was a dine-in order. Although I was slightly disappointed with the art on the coffee, it was quickly made up with the logo on the side of the coffee

The design on the side of the cup was a fox jumping. In the winter, foxes will jump and dive into the snow to find food or prey. This image is such a nice moment to capture, especially since it correlates well with the name of the shop.

Trying the cappuccino was something that was complete different than what I have tasted. I have been to countless coffee shop and I could find certain flaws in the flavor of coffee. From being too sweet to the aroma throwing off the taste, but with this coffee I could find none. The smell was bitter and concluded with a splash of sweet. Tasting the cappuccino, I fell in love completely. The taste was divine and was the best cappuccino I have tasted since moving to Ohio. I enjoyed the kick of bitterness dominating in the beginning than simmering down to a more mellow bitter tone with a slight sweet aftertaste. Very quickly, I found myself with an empty cup and quickly wished I ordered a bigger size.

Altogether, the place felt cozy and the taste was just wonderful. When returning, because I know I will soon, I will order a cappuccino to dine in. I would sit near the windows and enjoy a good day of people watching and sipping on my favorite cup and soon to be my favorite café shop.

Upperclassmen Mentor Meeting

On September 29, I had a meeting with Becca Schalip, my mentor in the Architecture Scholars program. I had a list of questions ready to ask.  Although, once I got there, I was very nervous. Since this was my first meeting that only included the two of us, the questions I had planned to ask quickly left.

So, in result, I asked questions that were based on architecture and tips to continue strong in the field of architecture. In response, she gave me strong advice and also was willing to lend me a hand when I needed help. She also intruduced me to clubs that I haven’t heard of and also showed me Senior studio.

Speaking with my mentor allowed myself to become more at ease, knowing that I have someone to rely on who was once in my shoes 3 years ago. I know that spending more time with my mentors will allow strong relationships and I am glad to say that our Scholars Mentor will meet together again for a nice dinner!
