Nutrient Planning for Organic Farms

Nutrient management in commercial crop production is challenging. Growers must incorporate numerous physical, chemical, biological, social and economic factors into their decisions on how to best “feed” crops within a sustainability-minded business context. This process is particularly challenging for organic growers unable to employ consistent, nutrient-dense fertilizers of various formulations in ground and foliar applications. The Penn State Univ. team of Elsa Sanchez and Heather Karsten help de-mystify organic whole farm nutrient planning in a summary of their work completed with farmers and extension professionals.
