Organic Chemistry

One of the most impactful courses I have taken during my time in undergrad was organic chemistry 1. Although organic chemistry 2 was also quite impact I believe that organic chemistry 1 laid the foundation that not only prepared me for 2 but has also prepared me for the rigors of higher level science courses as well as graduate programs. Organic chemistry 1 was a course unlike any other that I have taken as it was much more content heavy and required a firm understanding of every concept as each consecutive chapter build on what was previously covered, so to fall behind or fail to understand content meant risking failing every chapter afterward. This course helped me to develop better study habits and to become more intentional with my time and studying so not to waste effort on studying tactics that would not aid my understanding of the content. It also required me to study as we went along whereas prior classes I could study the content a week in advance of any exam and do fine. Organic chemistry also demonstrated the value of attending office hours to me, whether I had questions or not, and has influenced me to begin seeking aid more often in office hours for all my classes. I found that by meeting more regular with my professor outside of scheduled class was important for me getting more time with the content and getting to know faculty members better which has aided in my understanding of the chemistry field and the different facets that are involved in it. Overall I believe that organic chemistry has helped me to become a better student, and has prepared me with resources and strategies to take on intense courses.

Statement of Action

My plan for the last two years of college involves courses and becoming more involved in organizations. I will continue to study hard for classes and get to better know professors in the science field so I can understand the field better. During my third year I will look for research opportunities to get involved with a lab. I also plan on gaining more leadership in my church and through that will look to expand outreach opportunities to people of underserved backgrounds. In order to help the community I also plan to continue my involvement a community center for immigrants and will look to expand my service to reach the city more.

Vision Statement

I have a passion for learning about veterinary medicine and a passion for serving underprivileged communities. My vision for my last two years of college is to get accepted into a school for veterinary medicine, and to lead service opportunities for underprivileged communities.

Second Year in Review

My second year at Ohio State felt much different than my first year, almost like this was the first real year of college since this was the first time I had all in person courses and the campus had opened up more. Throughout the year I grew as a person by navigating what it looked like to be taking more intensive courses as well as leadership positions. Looking back I believe that this year really helped me to become more independent as a person and to learn more about what drives me.

Academically my second year was much more rigorous and required me to rework how I studied and even examine how much time I spent on schoolwork as it begin to impact my everyday life more. During the year I completed two organic chemistry courses and labs, all of which proved to be much harder than any class I had taken before, and challenged my study habits. Previously I had kept up with schoolwork and then studied a lot the week leading up to an exam, however with organic chemistry it quickly became apparent that if I did not study new content consistently as we went then I would fall behind and work would pile up. From this I have learned to set daily time aside to study for my classes even if it is only enough time to glance over notes or rewrite them, and gained an appreciation for attending lectures in person otherwise I may be tempted to push of watching lectures that are recorded. This year, with the increase in workload, I was also forced to find a better balance between school and prioritizing my health, as it became very easy for me to become absorbed in schoolwork and ignore basic needs like eating and staying physically active. I also found that my mental health declined as the year went on, however these realizations led to me better utilizing my time throughout the day to study and complete school work so that I was able to make more time to spend with friends and go on walks, all of which has greatly improved my health as a whole, as well as my ability to get schoolwork done.

During my second year I also took on a leadership role in my church and began to lead a men’s small group for Bible study and outreach. This had me reaching out during event fairs and meeting up with guys who had questions about Christianity or life in general, and eventually I started meeting up weekly to disciple guys. For the small group I would make weekly plans for Bible passages to engage my peers to think about how they can apply biblical lessons to their life as well as how we can better serve the community around us as a whole. Through the church I also aided in setting up a tent on campus and handing out free coffee to serve campus and reach out to people who wanted to learn more about God.

Finally, this year I began to help tutor at the Bridge, a community center focused on serving the Somalian refugee population around Columbus. As a tutor I would meet weekly with one to two students in high school and discuss how their schoolwork was looking; we would also discuss their habits in order to make a plan on how to improve their grades and prepare them for the future. Once we were done with planning I would then help them work on missed assignment for any of their classes and study for tests. One student I would consistently work with each week so we were able to build up a close relationship which allowed her to feel comfortable asking more questions on class content she struggled with. Throughout this experience I was able to grow my ability to mentor young adults who are going through pivotal moments in their life, and learned how best to talk to my student about important topics such as social justice in a manner that was educational but also appropriate for the setting.

First Year in Review

Starting my first year of college during a pandemic was hard and I expect things to be very different in the coming years, however I could not have asked for a more influential start to my college career.

My expectations coming into college were almost fantasy, socially I expected to instantly meet lots of people and make more friends than I could imagine, and academically I expected courses to fairly easy with professors who were distant from their students. I could not have been more wrong about everything, instead I found my first year to change my whole perspective of what it means to interact with people and how I go about studying.

For the first few weeks I found myself feeling out of place with most groups and ended up spending more time in my room than I would have liked to. Eventually the event fair came along and I wanted to find groups to join, especially a church group to keep my faith strong while away from home. During the fair I came across h2o church and their campus teams, which led to me finding an excellent group of people and some of my closest friends. From this I have realized just how important the bonds I make with people truly are and that what makes me happiest in life is being around people. Although I am still somewhat introverted this year in a pandemic has forced me to reach out more and really cherish even the smallest of interactions between people. I have also become more aware of the major impact the pandemic has had on mental health and have strived to be a light in all communities I am a part of and look to continue to educate myself on mental health and work to help those around me.

As for academics I found that my courses were truly engaging and much more difficult than I had expected. This caused me to reevaluate my study habits and how I learn best. I will be honest I still don’t have it all figured out, having the majority of my classes give lecture online made keeping attentive very hard for me and I still am not sure how best to divide up my time. From this I have gained an understanding of what striving for excellence will require of me, and although I have retained a high GPA there is still much more for me to figure out before I can make the best of my college experience. The hardship of struggling to keep up with my classes has however made me realize that I do genuinely enjoy learning and look forward to continuing my education. The commitment and time my professors have also poured into my courses have astounded me, and I look forward to having more in-person classes so that I may get to know professors better.

Career

Career plans: My plans for the future are to apply to graduate school for veterinary medicine, and go on to work at a small animal practice, or start my own practice. Although I want to specialize in small animals I plan on keeping an open mind until I graduate, so my career specialization could likely change to include large and small animals, or possibly even exotics.

Experience

  • Veterinary Assistant at County Line Veterinary Service: As a clinical assistant I have a wide range of responsibilities, the majority of which deal with taking histories on patients, and informing clients on their pet’s health and any questions they may have regarding medications, treatments, or procedures. My other responsibilities include scrubbing in to aid the doctors during surgery, preparing medication, cleaning the clinic, and taking care of patients

Artifacts

In my life there is one thing that is always first above all else, and that is God and my faith. My artifact is the Bible that was given to me by my family on January 1, 2018, the day that I was baptized. For most of my life I would say I was atheist, growing up in a Christian family but not consistently attending church I didn’t have the faith I have today. When I was in middle school my family started to attend our church regularly and it was a struggle for me, I constantly fought my parents but eventually I realized that it wasn’t all lies. I began to attend my youth group and began to ask my youth minister questions and my eyes opened to the wonders that God was doing in my everyday life. Through my faith I have gone on mission trips, taught the Gospel to children, mentored middle school age kids, and even preached two sermons in front of the whole congregation. The time leading up to my baptism was strenuous, doubtful, and trying, but when I rose from being submerged in the water I rose with an everlasting connection to the Greater Power.

Faith has not only given me a strong foundation to make it through life, but it has made me the man that I am today. Mission trips have broadened my knowledge of different cultures and opened my eyes to the poverty of the world. By being a counselor at a Christian camp I have gained leadership skills not only with children but with my elders. By preaching to the congregation I have begun to overcome my social anxiety and have been given opportunities to change lives through teaching. I am still doubtful and stressed at times but I have the strength to persevere through the hard times. Perhaps more importantly though it has given me a love for everyone no matter creed, race, or sexual orientation. Although my beliefs are not the same as everyone I am able to see life through different eyes and love those who are broken or hurting, and from this I have been able to make a difference in the lives of those who truly need me.

About Me

Hi, I am Hunter Michael Vaught. I was born and raised in Louisville, Ohio a small city that is surrounded by farmland. I am currently a freshman at The Ohio State University, where I am majoring in Biology on the pre-veterinary track. My intentions after undergraduate school is to apply to a College of Veterinary Medicine. During my freshman and sophomore years in high school I shadowed at County Line Veterinary Service where I grew my interest in the field of veterinary medicine. I was hired on at the same clinic my junior year as an assistant, and continue to work there during summer breaks. My position sees me handling patients, drawing up vaccinations, scrubbing in to aid the doctors during surgery, distributing non controlled medications, taking histories, answering phones, and educating clients. From working there I have gained an understanding of the rigorous and often unpredictable nature of veterinary medicine, and have only strengthened my resolve to become a veterinarian.

I come from a very loving family environment, with a mother who is a teacher, and a father who is a supervisor in a factory. I have a younger brother who is in middle school, and enjoys helping our neighbor restore his home and farm. With my family I often go on camping trips to state parks, and on hiking trails. Although I personally do not hunt, my family members all hunt so I have grown up around wilderness and developed a love for nature.

The most important things in life to me are faith, family, and friends. My life in Christianity has had the most influential impact on my character and how I interact with others. Through my hometown church I have gone on mission trips to Atlanta, Georgia and the Adirondack Mountains in New York where, which included such privileges as helping at a single parent daycare, planting gardens at a camp, holding cookouts for the homeless, and aiding soup kitchens. These trips opened my eyes to the poverty in the world and humbled me to the less fortunate. In my church I have also been the preacher on a few occasions, covering such subject matter as mental health and diversity. Overall my experience through Christ have not shown me there is a greater presence in the universe, but it has gifted me a humble and empathetic nature.

Other ventures in my life include being captain of my high school soccer team for two years, and various community service activities. Throughout high school I volunteered at Oak Hill Manor Retirement Community, where I helped the activities directors prepare for parties, escort the residents on trips, and simply visit with the residents. This is something I hope to continue when the current pandemic resides, because it is my belief that those in retirement homes do not receive the company and interaction that they deserve for living long lives.

Finally a more recent topic that I have been researching and advocating for is mental health awareness. I believe that this is not only a very serious matter, but an issue that has only increased over the time of Covid. It is my goal to raise awareness about the issue, and to create as many platforms for positive experiences and encouragement for anyone who may be fighting depression or simply in need of support. I have begun by becoming more active on social media posting inspirational messages, and by becoming more social and checking in on friends and fellow students letting them know that I am here for them. I hope to become involved in organizations on campus to advocate mental health.

First Semester in Review

This year so far has been a large leap of growth for me. Not only have I grown substantially in my faith, but I have also become more confident in my school skills. I am very pleased with how I have become independent and will continue to seek opportunities to be more independent.

So far I have only experienced one semester of college, however for as short of a time as it has been I feel that I have grown greatly, not only as a person but also as a Christian. While in college I have had my first experience with truly being independent without parents to guide me, or teachers to hold my hand through class. The freedom that I have gained has taught me how to portion my time so as to not fall behind in school, but to also pursue new interests and become more social.

As an introvert I have always found it difficult to put myself out there to meet new people, and starting college during a pandemic made it even harder. So reflecting back on my first semester I am proud that I have become very involved with a church group, and regularly meet with new friends I have made around campus. I now no longer fear what others will think, and have begun to speak out to help others. This has started with me advocating more for mental health awareness, as I started regularly checking in on anyone that will allow me, and started posting on social media to raise awareness that its okay to not feel okay at times, and that there are resources to help with that.

Another area that I have become more outspoken in would be my faith and my Christian beliefs. Coming into this semester my goal was to not neglect my faith now that I was in a new, much larger environment. Since the first few weeks I have been highly involved with the h2o church on campus, and have made some of my closest friends through it. I have also started to reach out to my peers on campus to offer education and guidance in faith.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: I have began my experiences in Global Awareness through mission trips to various states with my youth group in high school. On these trips my eyes were opened to the sharp contrasts between wealth and poverty throughout inner cities, and have engaged with many different cultures and religions while there. My plan to continue to grow my knowledge is to minor in religious studies so that I can learn about those with different beliefs than my own, and to continue to go on mission trips so that I can continue to challenge myself on global issues. I would like to one day go on a mission trip to a third world country and spend a month or more helping communities.
  • Original Inquiry: My Original Inquiry into the sciences began my freshman year of high school when I began shadowing at a local vet clinic, and have now worked there for two years over summer. My experiences there have given me an understanding of intense, and professional environments as well as growing my knowledge of veterinary medicine. I plan to continue working there throughout undergrad, and also plan on applying to be a part of a research lab on campus so that I can get an understanding of the research process.
  • Academic Enrichment: As a student I have always enrolled in advanced courses, and have sought after challenging experiences. This is shown through my involvement in the Biological Scholars program at OSU, and the effort that I put into my classes by connecting with my professors. I plan on challenging myself further by increasing my course load beyond pre health to include courses that relate to religious studies. My goal is to become well versed in both religion and science, so that I am able to apply both to everyday life and challenge my beliefs so that I can grow stronger in them.
  • Leadership Development: In high school I was captain of my soccer team for two years, where I helped to lead practice and connected to players outside of soccer to help better prepare them for their future. I also served leadership roles in my church through teaching Sunday school classes, helping with youth group programs, and preaching sermons that I wrote to the congregation. I plan on continuing my growth as a leader by connecting more with campus churches so that I can help to lead ministry teams, and plan on continuing to preach at my church back home.
  • Service Engagement: Throughout high school I volunteered at a local nursing home where I connected with residents and aided with events. I plan on continuing to volunteer through nursing homes around Columbus, and over summer when I am back home. I have also helped with various service projects through my church and community, which I look to continue by becoming involved with projects around campus.
