Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies

During week 5, module 5, Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies, we learned a ton of useful note-taking skills, techniques, and methods. I learned that my current note-taking strategy was creating obstacles for my learning throughout my undergraduate college career. The most crucial mistake that I realized I was making during my note-taking periods and many others fall victim to this bad habit is transcribing the professor’s every word during the lecture. I learned that transcribing can take your focus off learning while unconsciously directing your focus on not falling behind, which can add stress and lead to not having a maintainable structure of your notes. Furthermore, we also learned tips such as active listening. Active listening includes maintaining focus, spotting critical details in the professor’s volume change and pitch, and noticing important statements. In addition, we learned that putting away all distractions helps your work ethic expeditiously. I also found out that note-taking methods such as the Cornell method and the Outline method are something I would recommend to my peers and all incoming freshman because I feel using those methods would have helped me out in significant ways. Listening and Viewing Strategies are important because taking notes is a learning strategy that will be used in the workforce outside of school.
