G.O.A.L.S.

The world is constantly evolving and as a result, it is increasingly important to be engaged globally. Global awareness is essential in the workplace because of the impact that corporations have. Gaining these skills to be aware in college will go a long way in providing for more opportunities in the future. Coming from a diverse background has already given me an advantage in developing appreciation for various cultures; my involvement with the Indian Student Association while attending other activities organized by cultural clubs has helped me gain these skills.

Majority of the career opportunities related to the Data Analytics major revolves around the concept of original inquiry. This is due to the fact that Data Analytics is a novel field, and opportunities have only come into light over the last five years. With the realization that there are vast amounts of data generated from all the technology present in society and the fact that this data can be used to for optimal decisions has changed the world. The Ohio State University is one of the few universities that offer this major as a undergraduate degree, and thus are at the forefront of this field. Professors that lead this new path undoubtedly require help in their research, and I plan on reaching out to professors in the Statistics Department that require assistance in the field of Big Data.

Academic enrichment is important equally with classroom experiences as well as involvement in various academic clubs. I have always held myself to a high standard academically and this is evident through my presence on the Dean’s List. Taking difficult classes such as the classes offered through the Computer Science and Engineering Department as allowed me to pursue this knowledge outside of class. In addition, I am involved in various academic organizations and career-based clubs such as Buckeye Capital Investors and Big Data and Analytics Association. These clubs are career-based though they offer the opportunity to gain knowledge about various fields with relation to the academic courses that the clubs are centered on. For example, Buckeye Capital Investors focuses on accounting principles, which is essential for the Business Analytics specialization in the Data Analytics Major.

The Mount Leadership Society also is integral in developing the leadership abilities of students that are in the program. The diversity in the program is crucial as this leads to the diversity of ideas. Being able to develop as a leader means that one is willing to listen to other ideas and compromise in situations that are not ideal. For example, small group activities in this program gives others the opportunities of expressing their ideas. In addition, my involvement in my part-time job at Daily Fantasy Insider has helped me with communication, which is crucial as a leader.

The service and engagement aspect is arguably the most relevant to the Mount Leadership Society, the scholars program that I am a part of. As a second-year, students are required to serve at various service sites and tackle social justice issues that afflict Columbus. I plan on serving at service sites that focus on combating the issues of poverty and education. My experiences as a first-year scholar were essential in determining what issues I wanted to focus on. Growing up, I saw the impact of poverty in my home country of India and the difference in poverty between the two countries is staggering. Legacy Week as a first-year scholar allowed me to observe how poverty is prevalent in the Columbus area, and my involvement this year through the Year of Service will further give me insight on how to combat social justice issues.

Career

My most beneficial experience related to my career so far has been my work for Daily Fantasy Insider. As this is a part-time job and a job that is reliant on time management, I have gained a number of valuable skills. One such skill involves communication and meeting deadlines. On the technical side, I have refined my skills in R, Excel, and Tableau through its application with the data that I am provided.

Artifacts

This artifact is a presentation that I was assigned in my statistics class; as a Data Analytics major, statistics is integral to my field of study. In addition, statistics is more than just a class to me because I thoroughly material that I learn. The project that I was assigned was related to the NCAA Basketball Tournament, which was ideal due to my love of sports. I was able to contribute a lot to the group effort, and learned effective tools in communicating with my group members. In addition, I had the opportunity to apply my knowledge of the course material to a topic that was both interesting and enjoyable. The presentation was particularly insightful for me because it showed me the plethora of applications that majoring in Data Analytics allows for. The world is filled with data, and it is up to us to find a proper use for it.
