About Me

Hello! My name is Victoria Valentina and I am a second-year student at The Ohio State University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Medical Anthropology on a Pre-Medicine track. I’m from Jakarta, Indonesia but I’ve lived in Columbus, Ohio for most of my life. I enjoy learning about anatomy, anthropology, and psychology. I am involved in the Pre-Medicine Club and Alpha Phi Omega, a super awesome service fraternity! My hobbies include singing, playing piano, watching Spanish soap operas, and reading about conspiracy theories. My future plans include attending medical school and eventually participating in Doctors Without Borders.

To obtain global awareness as an honors student, I hope to have the opportunity to study abroad for one summer. I prefer to study in a Spanish-speaking country as I am considering pursuing a minor in Spanish. I would like to delve deeper into the language and culture of a country I know little about in hopes of broadening my perspective and understanding of the world around me.

I am currently seeking out a laboratory research assistant position on medical campus. I have been in contact with Dr. Hua Zhu, a professor of cardiac surgery at Wexner Medical Center. I plan to obtain a position in his lab for the spring semester and assist him in his research of the MG53 protein as a potential therapy for cornea injury. As a curious person in nature, I believe that this research position would be a great opportunity for me to gain experience interacting with medical professionals and writing research articles about topics relevant to medicine and the human anatomy. I also look forward to developing my wet laboratory skills.

I plan to achieve academic enrichment by completing rigorous coursework in honors-quality and upper-level classes throughout my undergraduate career. I am currently taking Honors Roman Civilization 2202, where we learn about Roman antiquity through the lens of Livy and Virgil in their works of classic literature. Aside from fulfilling major and honors program requirements, I would like to take multiple anatomy and anthropology classes, as I am incredibly interested in these fields.

In terms of leadership development, I have applied for and received a scholarship from the Ohio House of Science and Engineering called the “Choose Ohio First” scholarship. The scholarship program is designed to increase the competitiveness of Ohio’s STEM graduates in the workforce. This program is beneficial in a sense that it fosters my growth as a STEM major by encouraging me to meet with peer mentors and attend free tutoring sessions meant to help me succeed at Ohio State. The program also requires me to complete a certain amount of service hours, and one way to do so is to visit local middle and high schools to either lead science workshops or be a student teaching assistant. This program will help me develop both my leadership and service skills.

To fulfill my goal of service engagement, I plan to volunteer at a local hospital and get hands-on experience in the clinical setting. I hope to obtain a volunteer position at either Wexner Medical Center or Riverside Methodist Hospital by next semester or the summer after this school year. I have approximately a year and a half of volunteer experience at Riverside Methodist Hospital and understand the commitment and care required to be a hospital volunteer.
