Home to nearly 18 million people, the East African country of Malawi is one of the poorest in the world. The majority of Malawi’s population live in rural environments and face unique health challenges. Today approximately 1 million Malawians are living with HIV/AIDS, the country’s leading cause of death. Other widespread health problems include malaria, tuberculosis, schistosomiasis, and high infant and maternal mortality.
