Unedited Interview with PULL LEFT Curators

Unedited Interview Among Tang Xin, Su Wenxiang and Xu Chongbao
March 31 – April 3, 2014 at Deyu Pavilion, Jingdezhen
Xu Chongbao: As I was strolling down the ceramic market today, it dawned on me that since this place had became the production center of the imperial kiln in the Song Dynasty, it had established the dimension of imperial aesthetics and composition, while setting stringent standard and the nearly rigid heritage. At the same time, this large context had also nurtured the non-official kiln to flourish. In Beijing, the sprouting of contemporary art in the late 1970s to early 1980s was equally nourished by the powerful and rigid official artistic system.
Tang Xin: In the 1970s and 1980s, not only the arts, various aspects of society, including the spiritual, emotional, cultural have been oppressed for a long time. Since the 1940s, cultural production was strictly controlled where the individual had lost his/her ability for self-expression. Such control reached the ultimate during the Cultural Revolution where every individual was suppressed. By the end of the Cultural Revolution, everyone had the urge to express himself.
