Step Reflection

My STEP experience was for me to build my own computer. I researched all of the parts and assembled it on my own. I spent a lot of time researching the parts, as well as putting all of the parts together. I had a fun time building my own computer. It took about 6 hours to put all of the parts together and get the computer up and running. I learned a lot about computers and how they work. This will help me as I get into more of my major classes dealing with computer science. It will also let me see how both Windows and Mac operating systems interface with different programs. My STEP experience really helped me with building my computer because it was something that I wanted to do for a couple of years now. It also forced me to think realistically about what parts I would use for my computer. The whole STEP process has helped me quite a bit. I now have a Windows computer, that hopefully lasts a while as well, and a new experience and knowledge that I can share with others.

STEP Leadership

I found that there are a lot of different opportunities around me that I can help volunteer at and help out the community around me. One of them is to read to senior citizens, I didn’t know that people can volunteer to spend time with senior citizens who have no other family members. Also, our speaker was extremely nice. I was shocked at his skills. He seems to have photographic memory and can tell a person’s birth date by the way they hold a pencil. He also recited two poems to us as if he was reading them off of a board.

Résumé

I learned tonight a lot of new skills to improve my resume. I now know that I have plenty people that I can ask to look over my resume before I submit it to any job prospects. I also learned that the best way to present a resume is to save the file as a pdf. Tonight was one of the most informational nights of STEP so far.

Job Opportunities All Around

Tonight, the biggest thing that I learned was how many opportunities are available to me as a student of The Ohio State University. I was unaware of a career services office that was solely dedicated to help engineering students. I was lucky enough to meet some who is dedicated to helping people find a job after college. I now know more ways to look for internships and co-ops in the engineering field. It was a very informative night and I hope that to learn more through out my STEP program.

Step Meeting

Today, I started to look more into building my own computer from the ground up. I had some of an idea of what I am getting myself into and tonight I started digging deeper into what was needed. I found out that there was a lot of parts that I need and that there are many sources to get them from. I definitely need to figure out what some of the basic pieces that I need to start building so I can include this into my proposal.
