Service Reflection

This semester, I volunteered for ten and a half hours at the BuckeyeThon Dance Marathon. BuckeyeThon is a student run organization that raises money and awareness for children with cancer. Every year, BuckeyeThon hosts the Dance Marathon in order to raise money, and this year they raised a grand total of $1,704,184.19. I learned about this amazing opportunity through the Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars Program. In order to participate in the Dance Marathon, I raised $250 for BuckeyeThon. During the Dance Marathon, I participated in several events such as, silent disco, gaga ball, and others, in order to raise money for BuckeyeThon. Through this experience I learned how impactful events like these can be since BuckeyeThon was able to raise $1,704,184.19 for children with cancer. As a leader, volunteering for this organization has shown me that great things can be accomplished when people are brought together. Because of service learning, I am more aware of the impact organizations can have on the community.

Service Reflection

This semester, I volunteered at the Columbus Marathon for six hours and the Furniture Bank of Central Ohio for five hours. The Columbus Marathon’s organization runs the Columbus Marathon every year, and this year the proceeds went to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. I learned about this volunteering opportunity through the Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars Program. During this volunteering experience, I helped set up the water and Gatorade stations for the marathon and handed out cups of water and Gatorade throughout the Marathon. The Furniture Bank of Central Ohio is an organization that collects furniture from donors and gives it to people and families that need it. I also learned about this experience through the Dunn Sports and Wellness Scholars Program. Through my experience, I learned that volunteering is much more enjoyable for me when I am surrounded by people I know. I also learned that I enjoy activities that keep me busy and focused on a particular task, which volunteer work tends to do. As a leader, volunteering has shown me how I can impact communities I am a part of by just committing a few hours of my time. Because of service learning, I am more aware of the problems that affect many people in my community.
