First Semester Year in Review

My first semester wasn’t exactly what I expected and didn’t go too well academically, but was still a great experience that was full of memories I’ll never forget. At first, I was pretty nervous going to a school so far away from home full of strangers, but Ohio State really has turned into a second home for me. In terms of my academics, it was pretty rough for me keeping up with all my work and I ended up with grades that I was not happy with. But I am using grade forgiveness for one of those classes, and I am so determined and focused on doing well this semester. In terms of friends, I made a very close friend group full of people who I would do just about anything for. I am so grateful to have made these friends through Mount. And what comes with all my friends, is all the unforgettable memories. An example of one of those memories was the Penn State football game. What a crazy game it was. Overall, through all the hardship with my academics, the awesome Mount service projects, and all the fun, unforgettable memories I’ve made with my friends and with Mount, it was a great semester. And I can’t wait for this one to be even better.

Artifacts

The artifact I chose to discuss isn’t so much a physical object but more so a memory that I hold close to my heart and has shaped me to be the person I am today. My artifact is a photo of my PSA (public service announcement) team at the 40th HOSA Leadership Conference at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville, Tennessee. HOSA, which stands for Health Occupation Students of America, is an international club for students of all age who are interested in the health science career path. My high school is made up of multiple academic academies, each designed for for a specific career path. The health sciences academy, the one I was apart of in high school, has a club just for the health care students, which is HOSA. HOSA allows health sciences students to compete in healthcare related subjects on a county, state, and international level. In order to move on to the next competition you have to place high enough in your event. My event, which was a team event, was “public service announcement,” for which we had to create a thirty second infommercial and a five minute memorized speech. Each of the five members had a segment of the speech to present that analyzed the video. My team and I came in first place in the New Jersey State Competition, and in order to place for the national event, you or your team had to get third place or higher. So, on June 22nd to June 25th, 2016 my team and I, along with a group of students who had also placed into the national event, traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to compete in the national competition. Before we left, my team and I perfected our video and presentation in preparation for the national competition. We competed and came in 8th place out of around 230 teams. My team and felt very accomplished that we had come so far and were able to reach our goal of making it to nationals and actually placing in it as well! I loved the experience and I loved working with my team. It played a massive role in influencing me to go into business in healthcare. If I could do it again I would; it is an academic experience I will never forget.
