Progression

At the end of each semester, the Undergraduate Studies Committee reviews the academic progress of undergraduate students.  For students in academic difficulty, the action taken by this committee is governed by two sets of policies–those of the university and those of the College of Nursing.  Any academic action (university academic warning or academic probation) is based upon the cumulative point-hour ratio for the entire time a student is enrolled at Ohio State (including pre-nursing and nursing course work).  To remain in good standing in the university, a student must maintain a point-hour ratio of at least 2.00.  Deficiency points are applied only to the records of students whose point-hour ratio is below 2.00 and are defined as the number of credit points a student would have to earn to bring her or his point-hour ratio up to that level [Faculty Rule 3335-9-23 Minimum scholastic requirements].

Grade Forgiveness

3335-8-27.1 Grade Forgiveness Rule

Undergraduate students may petition the authorized representative of the dean or director of their enrollment unit to repeat a course and, after completing the course the second time, have the original course credit and grade excluded from the calculation of the student’s cumulative point-hour ratio, but remain on the student’s official permanent record. This action will be subject to the following conditions:

  • Permission to apply this rule must be obtained by the fourth Friday of the semester or summer term (the second Friday of a session during autumn or spring semesters, or a summer session; or the first Friday of a May session) in which the repeated course is taken.
  • The same course may be repeated only once under this rule.
  • This rule may be applied for a maximum of three courses.

Please note: While we will honor this policy in the College of Nursing, it does not supersede or replace our progression policy. Any grade earned in a required course still applies.

PLACEMENT ON PROBATION BY SPECIAL ACTION (COLLEGE)

As stated in Faculty Rule 3335-9-25(B), “if at any time the preparation, progress, or success of a student in an academic program is determined to be unsatisfactory, the college or school in which the student is registered shall be empowered to place the student on academic probation.”

Students are notified in writing of being placed on probation by special action. Special action probation alerts the student to the need for improved achievement in the area(s) of deficiency in order to continue in the program.

Students will be placed on probation by special action in the College of Nursing for the following:

  1. A cumulative point-hour ratio below a 2.00.
  2. A cumulative point-hour ratio below a 2.50 in the required course work in the nursing major.
  3. If a grade of “C, C-,” “D+,” “D,” “E,” “W,” or “U” is earned in one required nursing course during a semester; and students will be required to repeat the course(s) or an equivalent course accepted by the college, with a grade of “C+” or better

As stated in Faculty Rule 3335-8-32 students may withdraw from a course by a certain date, if a student withdraws failing, faculty will monitor and use this information when decisions are made regarding probationary terms or dismissal.

*Required courses: All required courses in Nursing, Microbiology 4000, Human Nutrition 2210 or 2310 or 2410 and any of the designated courses in Data Analysis. Students entering the University AU 2022 or later must take Statistics 1350.01 or 1350.02 to complete the Math and Quantitative Reasoning requirement.  Students must earn a “C+” or higher in all required courses.

CONDITIONS AND/OR RESTRICTIONS WHILE ON WARNING OR PROBATION

Students on probation in the College of Nursing are restricted to enrolling for no more than 16 credit hours per semester during the warning or probationary term.  Students on warning or probation may be required to meet with the Chair of the Undergraduate Studies Committee.  Additional conditions and/or restrictions may be specified. Once you are placed on probation within the College of Nursing, you will remain on probation until graduation.

Disenrollment from the College of Nursing

Students may be disenrolled from the College of Nursing for any of the following reasons:

  1. Lack of progress evidenced by:
    1. two or more grades below “C+” (2.00) in required courses and/or
    2. two or more withdrawals from required courses and/or
    3. failure to earn a cumulative point-hour ratio above a 2.00 or a 2.50 in nursing coursework and/or
    4. failure to meet the conditions of probation and/or
    5. earning a grade below “C+” along with two withdrawals from required nursing courses.

Students disenrolled from the College of Nursing have the option to transfer to another academic unit if their academic standing in the university is satisfactory. Students may petition for reinstatement to the college after one academic term. A petition is submitted to the Undergraduate Studies Committee and should provide verification that the student has strengthened him/herself in the areas of weakness that led to the disenrollment. The Undergraduate Studies Committee will evaluate a student’s ability to be successful in the program and make a decision on the request for reinstatement.

If a student is dismissed from the College of Nursing because the cumulative point hour ratio fell below a 2.0, the student is required to change their major and take non-nursing courses to raise their cumulative point hour ratio to 2.0 or better.  Once a 2.0 cumulative point hour ratio has been achieved, the student can petition for reactivation.

Progression and Remediation Policy

Student Success Plan (SSP):

A student may be considered for a Student Success Plan (SSP) if the clinical/lab objectives identified on a clinical evaluation tool related to accountability, professionalism, and/or use of the nursing process are not being met. The objective(s) not being met will be identified on the SSP to delineate specific areas that a student must improve to succeed in the program and grow as a developing professional in the practice of nursing. Failure to meet the clinical/lab objectives listed on the clinical evaluation tool will demonstrate a lack of progression in clinical/lab.  A student who is not meeting clinical/lab objectives as identified on the clinical evaluation tool for the course will not pass the course as identified in the syllabus for that course.

Program-Wide Student Success Plan (PW-SSP):

If a student successfully meets the objectives of a previous performance improvement plan, but demonstrates reoccurring patterns of not meeting objectives in a second nursing course, a Program-Wide Student Success Plan (PW-SSP) will be initiated. This plan will be transferred to each nursing course for the remainder of the prelicensure program. Failure to meet the clinical/lab objectives as identified on the PW-SSP or any objectives listed on the clinical evaluation tool, will result in a lack of progression.  A student who is not meeting clinical/lab objectives as identified on the clinical evaluation tool for the course will not pass the course as identified in the syllabus for that course.

Remediation:

A student who has not successfully completed clinical/lab course objectives cannot repeat the course or progress to the next clinical/lab course until required remediation has been successfully completed. Based upon student learning needs, the Director for Prelicensure Programs and Supervisor for Student Success will recommend a remediation plan to the Undergraduate or Graduate Studies Committee and communicate the objectives to complete the required remediation to the student. The student will be required to successfully meet the objectives of the remediation to progress in the program.

Students are expected to complete the nursing curriculum in a timely and sequential manner.  Students needing a leave of absence from the program are required to submit a petition to the Undergraduate Studies Committee. Students will then need to submit a petition to reactivate when seeking to return to the program. Space availability within courses and clinical sites is considered when reviewing petitions for reactivation. If there is not space availability, the petition to reactivate may be denied. If approved, the reactivation process will need to be followed.

Withdrawal from Program

Students that withdraw from the BSN program/ College of Nursing, to include major changes, will be required to submit a petition to reactivate to the BSN program if they seek to return. Space availability within courses and clinical sites is considered when reviewing petitions for reactivation. If there is not space availability, the petition to reactivate may be denied. If approved, the reactivation process will need to be followed.

The Curriculum Petition is found here. The Petition to Reactivate can be found here.

Reactivation Process:

Prior to student reactivation into the clinical setting (due to course failure, clinical failure or leave of absence, etc.), a skill check-off process will need to be completed to assess readiness for patient care. Successful completion of this process requires no further action. If the student is unsuccessful, they are required to enroll in an independent study with the Director of Pre-licensure Programs or designated college representative and review skills from previous coursework.

Students reactivating into the program will be held responsible for the policies and curriculum in the handbook for the semester of reactivation. The policies and curriculum in the reactivation semester may differ from handbook when admitted.

Classroom Conduct

Honesty, trust, fairness, respect and responsibility are expected student behavior. Cell phones, pagers,  headphone/earbuds and other types of electronic devices are to be turned off and stored out of sight.  Any student found to be using an electronic device and/or is suspected of academic misconduct during independent classroom work will be referred to The Ohio State University Committee on Academic Misconduct https://oaa.osu.edu/academic-integrity-and-misconduct  .  For any exams and quizzes in-person or online, it is expected that students follow the course expectations for independent work on tests and not share information related to questions, answers, or related exam materials.  Students suspected to be in violation will be reported to The Ohio State University Committee on Academic Misconduct.
