Photo from Value Export’s ‘Body Configurations’

Project Statement

For this project I had to remake/interpret my own understandings of a photographer’s work. I chose Valie Export and her work called “Body Configurations” where she places female models in locations/spots in the city that you wouldn’t expect to be areas for picture taking, such as the middle of the road, curbs, corners of buildings, but then moves to nature and courtyards where the body then really begins to stand out. Another key element is all of the pictures are in black and white. In some of her photos there are different types lines and/or shapes that help form the female body, but for the most part each photo is centered on the model and her ability to camouflage into society yet still stand out. In my photos that are supposed to replicate her theme, I wanted to work with areas that didn’t seem to have any importance and turn them into something interesting and a new perspective to experience.

Reflection

I loved doing this project because it gave me the ability to understand and learn how the body can interact with the atmosphere it is in. I never would’ve thought I could make something look so simple yet it holds so much weight as well because it is all about interpretation of the viewer. Not only is photography a big part of my life but it forces me to pay close attention to all elements that go into a single photo. The model, the color, the weather, the lighting, the facial expression, the body layout, the list could go on. Each element plays its own role in telling the story and that’s what I love most about it. There’s so much you can do with photography just as much as there is in design. Seeing the correlation between the two has really helped my eyes grasp onto things that might not have before in design and I think that plays a really big role in the designer that I am today.
