Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

The main pillars of Honors are summed up by the acronym G.O.A.L.S. The first letter G stands for global awareness. I plan to act on this pillar by going abroad. With hope of one day becoming a medical researcher, I plan to try to do a summer abroad and do a medical researcher internship. This will allow me to gain insight of not only another culture but of the different research that is going on around the world. The O stands for original inquiry. As I said, I want to do medical research so original inquiry is something I plan on being very involved in. I plan to do the honors degree with research distinction. I also hope to be involved in different labs throughout my undergraduate career. I plan to be involved in a lab that is conducting cancer research, and I also have an interest in neurological research as well. The A stands for academic enrichment. I plan to fulfill this by taking classes that challenge me whether that be honors or upper level courses. I also plan to take classes that are outside my range of knowledge as I plan to take American sign language courses, which is a subject I have no prior knowledge of but would love to learn. The L stands for leadership development. I plan to fulfill this requirement though the clubs I am involved in. I am a part of the Bluefish Swim School and Pets 4 Heroes. Both of these clubs I hope to be involved in through college, and eventually I hope to take leadership roles in them as well. I also hope to take leadership roles within the classroom whether that is by being a good lab partner or being a person people can come to with their questions. The S stands for service engagement. I plan to fulfill this through a couple different volunteering opportunities. As I previously said, I am a part of Bluefish Swim School which is a program where we teach children with developmental disabilities to swim. I am also a part of Pets 4 Heroes, as I said, which is an organization who matches dogs with veterans and first responders who experience high stress everyday on the job. Through this club we raise money and volunteer our time to help a community that has helped so many other. Finally, I also plan to fulfill this through volunteering as various hospitals, as I am very interested in medicine. All of these experiences will help me learn and gain a broader view of the communities around me. All of these pillars are in place to make sure honors students are gaining the most out of their college experience and contribute to society in the best way they can. I plan to act on all of these pillars to the best of my abilities throughout my college career.

Artifacts

[Artifacts are the items you consider to be representative of your academic interests and achievements. For each entry, include both an artifact and a detailed annotation.  An annotation includes both a description of the artifact and a reflection on why it is important to you, what you learned, and what it means for your next steps.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen.
