Second Year GOALS, Year in Review

I plan to further work towards global awareness by taking courses to help develop myself as a well-rounded student and person. I will become involved in courses that broaden my view on the world and open my eyes to society as a whole.  I have taken a class that dealt with another culture, and it exposed me to a different style of living from my own.  I have become involved in an organization and participated in activities that have allowed me to make a difference in my community.  This organization allows me to interact with many people that come from different cultural backgrounds. It is important to be exposed to global awareness, because the world around us is just as important as our small community. Being able to learn about and help others around the world would develop an appreciation for diversity. As an honor student, I will participate in the advancement of global awareness through diverse courses and activities. For the original inquiry section of the goals, I have become involved in Spinal Cord Injury research with Dr. Jan Schwab.  I currently have my own project looking at the degree of hypoxia that develops in the spinal cord after injury.  This is a non-redundant project that exposes me to the scientific process, and it has helped me understand the research process. For academic enrichment, I will use my honors contract to map out my courses for the rest of my college career. I will use it to create a program of study. My honors contract will ensure the completion of academically enriching coursework.  My curriculum will prepare me for a future in medicine and it will expose me to many aspects of life, which will make me a well-rounded student. I want to form my coursework around neuroscience courses, pre-med courses, and courses that will give me a head start in my medical career. I will also take GE courses, which I am very excited about. I plan on taking GE courses that interest me such as intro to theatre. My course selections will demonstrate going above the minimum, because my coursework will be the most rigorous to advance me above the minimum standards. I will take high level courses to prepare for the rigorous courses given in medical school. I chose neuroscience, because it will allow me to take courses that are relevant to my future education beyond undergraduate.  I chose the general education courses, because they interested me.  For leadership, I am involved in the neuroscience ambassador program.  I hold a leadership spot to where I am in charge of staffing and running neuroscience events.  This develops my leadership skills, because I am in charge of a group of people that I direct for the smooth operation of event held by the neuroscience department.  This leadership position will develop the skills I need to be a leader in the medical community as a future physician.  For service engagement, I would like to participate in helping children, as stated above, and possibly working in my area to help the homeless, because nobody deserves to go through the lack of shelter and lack of food that they go through. If I could volunteer my time to the community to help those less fortunate, that would be where I spend my time. I want to become involved in service to the disabled. I have worked with the disabled before, and it is a life changing experience. To make a person with disabilities smile may be the best feeling one can possibly attain. My grandmother runs a disability housing establishment and I have the blessing to work with mentally handicapped people, and I love it. I would love to become more involved in working with the disabled here in Columbus.  Currently, I am only involved with the neuroscience programs outreach to high schools. I go to high schools and teach neuroscience, to expose future college students to the benefits of a degree in neuroscience.  I plan on volunteering at a nursing home with the elderly to help them with their daily activities.
