Hello, my name is Tanner Turner and currently I am a senior here at The Ohio State University. I am in the Sustainable Plant Systems program majoring in Turfgrass Management. I expect to graduate from The Ohio State University after the fall semester of 2016 in December. After graduating my goal is to obtain a job with a minor or major league baseball team.
For the past three summers I have been working with the Cincinnati Reds Ground Crew under the supervision of former head groundskeeper Doug Gallant and current head groundskeeper Steve Lord. While working for the ground crew I have learned many new skills when it comes to dealing with turf, soil, and people. Every day I had my own set of task to get done this included repairing bullpen mounds from the night before, mowing the infield and foul territory, and repairing home plate. I also had many tasks that varied from day to day, one of these included leading a team outside the stadium to mow the front portion, water flowers, and pull weeds. That’s one task that I’m proud of it gave me the opportunity to be a boss and I was able to prove to my boss and more importantly myself that I can be in charge and be a leader. I worked every day and know what it takes to be in the industry, it wasn’t unusual for me to put in a lot of time at the stadium but that didn’t bother me because it’s a job I am very passionate about.
Growing up I was very involved in sports such as baseball, basketball, and football. As well as extracurricular activities like Mock Trial, FFA, and 4-H. These taught me at an early age hard work, dedication, self-discipline, communication, and decisiveness. All strong attributes I think are important to have and each of these have helped me in the past to get me where I am today.
