Interning for a Major League Baseball team
Towards the end of my sophomore year of college at The Ohio State University I applied to be an intern at Great American Ballpark home of the Cincinnati Reds where I would intern for their ground crew. To my surprise I got the internship, I figured someone like me with no experience wouldn’t get the internship. However I was exactly what they were looking for.
While working there I performed such task as mowing, dragging the field, bullpen prep, cleaning the field, putting the tarp on the field, batting practice set up and break down, pregame preparation, and end game preparations. The thing I like the most about this internship is being able watch every game up close, interacting with the players, and spending time with people who have the same interest as me in turfgrass and baseball. I believe that this internship has prepared me for the career path I have chosen because it has given me a chance to experience what it is like to be on a major league level of grounds keeping.
While working at Great American Ballpark I worked under the supervision of Doug Gallant, Derrik Grubbs, and Robbie Dworkin all former graduates of The Ohio State University. All three of these guys were great mentors, the reason for this is because they all have been down the path that I am on right now and are helping and guiding me down that path to be successful in the sports turf industry. After my internship I have been able to continue working with Ground Crew and still learning something new every day.
