Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Hiking- My family has been hiking since forever. We have gone as far west as Wyoming and as far east as Virginia. To me, there are two types of hiking. There is urban hiking and there is nature hiking. My family loves to do a lot of both. Hiking helps me unwind and appreciate that not everything is dependent on where I go in life. Hiking really helps me to live in the now. In school, we are always asked about our goals or what we want to be when we grow up. When I am hiking, all I can pay attention to is the beauty of everyday life. It allows me to see cool places and gives me time with my family away from the buzz of society.

Undergraduate Student Government- I am currently an undergraduate engineering student, and I am also a member of Undergraduate Student Government at The Ohio State University. It is a very different experience from student government in high school. As a member of USG, I have found that we actually make a real difference in student life on campus. As a member of USG’s sustainability committee, we are currently working on a project, the CEMP, with the university. This project will change how Ohio State will manage their energy, and it a very large piece of legislation. USG is allowing me to create a strong friend network with my peers outside of engineering while being able to pursue my interests. I am so happy to be apart of such a passionate group of students. Below, you will see the 2016 USG sustainability committee.

About Me

Hello. My name is Peri Turk. I am a first-year biomedical engineering major at The Ohio State University. I am originally from Wadsworth, OH where I live with my parents, four siblings, and two dogs. I went to Wadsworth High School. I was involved in band where I played French Horn, in National Honor Society where I served on the executive board, and in Buckeye Girls State where I served as Majority Whip of the Senate. I decided to go into biomedical engineering because I am passionate about helping make quality of life better for the greater good. This summer I worked as a intern at the Cleveland Clinic under Jay Alberts, and I saw first hand some of the ways an engineer of any type can affect people’s lives. Ultimately, I hope to participate in research in biomechanics or molecular, cellular, and tissue engineering. I eventually want to develop technology that can help better the lives of patients living with chronic diseases such as parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis. I would also love to participate in stroke rehabilitation research. My very long term goal is to work at the Cleveland Clinic as the head of my own lab in the biomedical engineering department.
