Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more guidance on using your ePortfolio, including questions and prompts that will help you get started, please visit the Honors & Scholars ePortfolio course in Carmen. G.O.A.L.S.

Each of the G.O.A.L.S. have a special meaning to me. As a future doctor, I must be able to connect with a wide range of people with diverse backgrounds. I need to question when new treatments or drugs are released, so my patients get what is best for them. Doctors need to be able to handle intense days of meeting with many patients, filing paperwork, as well as know how and when to delegate jobs to others. Finally, probably the most important thing, to me at least, is to show compassion and a deep desire to help others. Here, I detail some ways that as an undergraduate, I will be able to practice these skills, as represented in the Honors and Scholars G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: I want to be able to understand a broad range of people, so that I may be able to give them the correct aid needed. To do so, I plan on taking American Sign Language, allowing me to communicate with a whole new branch of people. I also want to learn about different cultures through the lens of health practices, so that I do not impede upon their beliefs when trying to make them better. This could be through taking classes about the cultural diversity found in different areas of the United States. It could also be through the participation of the Doctors without Borders organization here at Ohio State.

Original Inquiry: I have already participated in research and hope to continue. I have already identified several faculty members in my major’s department with whom I would be interested in working under. I plan on talking with them, before deciding on a lab that works best for both me and them. I aim to complete research as part of the cancer center.

Academic Enrichment: My major, Molecular Genetics, has most of its classes at the 4000 and 5000 level. I am also thinking of double majoring in Neuroscience, another degree that has mostly 4000 and above classes. Currently, I am also taking Honors Chemistry and Honors Biology, both of which have rigorous coursework. These advanced courses will prepare me for handling many things at once as a doctor.

Leadership Development: During classes, I ask many questions, allowing my classmates and I to develop a deeper understanding of the material. I also plan on being part of a sports team, where I will be able to set an example for my teammates. As an athlete, I will show people the importance of hard work, as well as the importance of sharing responsibilities with others. Eventually, I would also begin to take more responsibility in the lab as  I begin to gain experience.

Service Engagement: Finally, I hope to volunteer at an animal shelter, as well as at a home for the elderly. Both these populations are vulnerable and need to be cared for, even if it is just spending time with them. Through these service engagements, I want to improve the happiness of others. The elderly should feel appreciate and treated like they matter. I am sure they would enjoy telling stories and passing along bits of wisdom, anything to make them feel less fragile. As for the animal shelter, these cats and dogs have done nothing wrong to deserve the abuse or harsh conditions faced before being rescued. I am a firm believer that dogs can help save people too. I want to care for these animals and help them find a forever home, reminding me about the importance of simply living in the moment and enjoying the little things, as most dogs do.
