Day 1, December 14: Traveling South

Our chariot to the airport.

Making friends

We’re on our way!  All of the students were early getting to the bus so we made record time!  We’re all through security at CMH and the students are off finding breakfast.

It’s kind of crazy we’re in another country! It’s been a very long day, but one that was worth it. Starting early (at 5:15am), we all had that sort of tired excitement. That would continue for those of us who didn’t get much sleep on the plane, but the promise of new places and experiences kept us all looking forward to the week ahead.

New friendships have already begun to form as we had some downtime before our first flight to just sit and chat with each other. I know the group I was in talked about all of our various pets for most of the time. Cats, bunnies, and dogs were displayed in pictures and the only reaction that could rightly follow was “awww!”. We had first time flyers ripe with anticipation of what would happen on the flight, and seasoned veterans to feild their questions. It was nice to see everyone helping each other.

When we got to Houston the hunt for food began and even though there were tons of options for us to choose from, most of us (myself included) chose Wendy’s for our lunch. Hey, cheaper food I know I won’t hate is always good in an airport. After lunch we shared our infographics we had made for class with the group. It was really cool to see what everyone chose to research and show an interest in. We were informed by our peers about everything from wealth distribution in Trinidad to the reptiles of Trinidad and everything in between.

Another flight ahead of us, this one much longer than the first, we set to board the plane and take off. Personally, I’ve never flown over an ocean so that was pretty cool. We are getting to the hotel late and having KFC for dinner. They really like KFC in Trinidad. I wasn’t expecting it. But today was an awesome day of forming new friendships, having first time flights, and starting our week in Trinidad. I can’t wait to do everything else!
