More than one third of eligible voters in the U.S. do not vote.  What changes to the election process would you make to increase voter participation?

To increase voter participation, I would make registering to vote easier. We are now in a world that uses technology on an everyday basis, so voters should be able to register to vote online without the hassle of registering in person and this could help avoid legible writing issues. Another option is to automatically register qualified voters who visit DMVs or other social service agencies. Known as automatic voter registration, this policy makes political participation more convenient and has been adopted by more than 13 states to date. Also, citizens should automatically be registered to vote at 18. However, people sometimes simply do not have the time to leave their jobs to vote. So, a solution would be to change voting day to a weekend or make voting day a federal holiday. By changing the date of election day to a weekend or federal holiday, more citizens will be able to participate in their civic duty. Also many voters simply don’t understand what they are voting for, so we could change the way we communicate issues with voters. Many others simply do not want to wait in line, so we should create a system where you can schedule an appointment or pick a time that works best for you to come in and vote. One last solution would be to create an official voting app. the app would allow for individuals to view videos, statements, and platforms of those who they are voting for. The app could even have a pre-vote option, which could be filled out in advance and pulled up once a voter is inside the booth, making the process quicker on election day. With these solutions, voter turnout should increase if we pay attention to what works best for the community.

G.O.A.L.S.

While at OSU, I want to become more aware of the world around me by looking more into research opportunities in my major, but also as a Scholar I want to explore political and legal topics. I want to learn more about Pharmacology and Criminal Justice. My priorities will consist of meeting with my Academic Success Partner and my Success Coach to make sure I have a balance between with social life, school work, and mental and physical wellness. I want to learn to understand material, not just to remember and I will do this be taking advantage of tutoring and office hours. Leadership experiences I hope to pursue include getting involved in organizations that help the community such as MedLife, GEM @ KIPP, Buckeye Reach but also getting involved in a organization that is fun such as NAPS. Social issues that I am interested in include volunteering with juvenile inmates and studying abroad.

Artifacts

My mentors are Evan and Alexa. Evan is from Long Island, New York. He is currently majoring in Accounting. He joined PSL because he was interested in politics but didn’t get accepted into Honors, so he applied for Scholars. He is apart of the fraternity ZBT and is a member of the Jewish Org Hillel. He is a sophomore and if he could change one thing from his freshman year, he would be a little bit more friendly on friends. Alexa is also a sophomore. She was born in North Carolina, but is originally from Akron, Ohio. She is a Political Science and International Studies Major. She is a lifeguard at the RPAC, VP of Amensty International, a member of USG, OSU Votes, and College Democrats.

About Me

My name is Jayla Treadwell. I am from Dayton, Ohio. I attended Dayton Early College Academy which is a small school on the University of Dayton’s campus ranging from grades 9-12. I am the eldest of six kids and the first in my family to go to college. In high school, I completed multiple job shadows and internships. I actually won first place for my innovative ideas in the Entrepreneurship 101 internship and Emegering Young Business Leaders. I also completed a internship at Ziks Pharmacy, which lead me to my major: Pharmaceutical Sciences. As a 1st PSL, I hope to gain awareness and appreciation for Ohio’s Judicial System while also building a relationship with other Scholars students.
