About Me

thumbnail_fileHello, my name is Rebecca, and this is my e-Portfolio. I come from a small suburb in Illinois, population 22,000, about 45 minutes northwest of Chicago, and I am super excited to be attending college (out of state) at The Ohio State University!

I was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and have moved a total of four times since then, which has really kept me on my feet and has helped me to get used to meeting new people. While I do tend to shy away from meeting new people on many occasions, I think that meeting new people is incredibly important because I believe that the only way to get around in this world is by having connections with others. With connections and an abundance of knowledge and skill, one will be successful (at least that’s what I think). So, my goals in college surround that basic mindset; I plan to meet new people/make new connections and further my education.

My goal at OSU is to come out with a major in applied mathematics which will help lead me into medical school. My career goal is to be a neurosurgeon, and that has been the same since I was a sophomore in high school. Prior to my sophomore year, I knew I wanted to be a surgeon, however, it wasn’t until a long term concussion that lead me to figure out why I wanted to be a brain surgeon over any other specialty. My concussion was anything but ordinary; it lasted for six months and it was the first concussion I’d ever had. For people that don’t know too much about concussions, an overwhelming majority of first-time concussions go away on their own in a matter of weeks. Less than 5% of concussions last for more than two months, and of that 5 % that last that long, a majority of those people have had multiple concussions or have pre-existing brain issues. So, being outside of that norm, it was all very scary but I overcame it with sheer willpower and with the help from my family and friends. Fast forward three years–almost to the day–and I’m a high-level academic achiever with competitive goals. With my long term concussion and my neighbor having died of a brain tumor, it really settled in my career goal and I’m pretty positive I will stick with that.

Some things I like to do include: swimming, playing trombone (or other instruments), reading, sleeping, watching Vine/YouTube videos and sometimes watching TV (and yes, I’d spend my Friday night doing one of the following instead of hanging out with people). Outside of school and the hobbies listed above, you would see me working as a lifeguard in the summer or working during the school year on homework. My favorite subjects in school are math and science (no wonder I’m in the STEM scholars program)!

I’m really excited to join the Buckeye class of 2020, and I can’t wait to challenge myself in and out of the classroom!
