Adventures with my Mount Family

This is a picture from the first time I got to spend time with my Mount Family. Recently, we had a family meal, and it was great to speak with them. I enjoying giving advice to the first years about my experiences at college and telling them all the things I have learned. I also got to official induct my mini into Mount, which was a lot of fun.

Artifact 2

No matter your political party, I think we all know how important it is to vote. I got to vote for the first time in the 2018 midterm elections. As I have canvassed for several political candidates this year and in 2016, it was amazing to finally cast a ballot. I am more knowledgeable about the local candidates in my hometown, Hudson, Ohio, so I voted absentee in Summit County. Although it is not yet election day, and therefore I do not know the outcomes yet, I know I did all I could to support my candidates.

Year in Review

Over the past year, I have learned so much about myself. College brought so many surprises and new experiences to me, that sometimes it was hard not to get overwhelmed. All in all, my year gave me a new perspective on my life experiences, and what being a part of a university’s community is like. I made a goal at the beginning of the year to be more open to foreign experiences, and I believe I was successful in accomplishing that. One small thing I did was try every single coffee drink at the coffee shop by my dorm. I believe it is small things like that allow us to be less worried about changes in our lives. Getting up every morning for 3 months and getting a different drink to start the day reflected how every day I had at Ohio State was different, new, and exciting.

Global Awareness

  • I have recently discovered more about actuaries in countries outside the United States. While I was looking for internship interview advice I found 2 youtube channels by actuaries, one working in Canada and one in Scotland. I watched some of their videos and noticed several differences in requirements and perspectives of actuaries in the United States. Before this, I never thought about how my career would be different if I was from another country.

Original Inquiry

  • I am currently in the process of applying to many different actuarial internships. Many of the programs have a research element to them, which I am excited to explore. I have yet to participate in any original inquiry activities, so I am anxious to work with a team of real actuaries on their research.

Academic Enrichment

  • Since the beginning of college, I have always known that I want to major in Actuarial Science, but I only recently decided on the minor I am pursuing. I am choosing to minor in Insurance because many employers are looking for actuaries that have a more nuanced perspective, not simply with the mathematical aspects of the job, but also with the big-picture principles of insurance. I believe this minor will greatly advance my knowledge of insurance concepts that do not directly affect my job, but are still good to understand.

Leadership Development

  • As a member of Mount Leadership Society, I recently participated in Legacy Week, in the role of financial coordinator. This role allowed me to use some principles I used in Accounting 2000 to design a budget for the several service projects my team was creating. It was interesting to see how the concepts I learned in class helped me in a leadership capacity.

Service Engagement

  • I have just begun working with the Columbus Metropolitan Library, at their Homework Help center for local students. I find being able to help young students very rewarding, and it has given me a better understanding of the obstacles some of the students who come to us face in their home lives.

Mount Leadership Summit
The theme of the Summit was collaboration. The keynote speaker was Bill Dorenkott, Director of Swimming and Diving at OSU. He spoke about how the manner in which his team collaborates in athletics can be transferred over to other areas of life. I hadn’t attended a large conference like this before, so it was a good experience. I learned to be cautious with your time, and to chose speakers that you feel you can connect with. The first presentation I attended was about collaboration in sciences, with Jim Lee. Lee spoke about how different personality types are needed for a successful team. The second presentation I attended was by Kelly Newlon. She spoke about how she has collaborated with people and animals all over the world!
I met lots of new people, including upperclassmen, in Mount and made connections. Plus, it was fun to see all of my new classmates and friends dressed up in business attire. Oh, and how could I forget? We got Mount fidget spinners!

About Me

Hello! My name is Allison Torrence, a first year at the Ohio State University. I am majoring in Actuarial Science with an intent to minor in Statistics. In the future, I hope to work in insurance. I am a Mount Leadership Society Scholar, a program which emphasizes leadership and service in students.

I am originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, and have lived in both Saratoga, New York and Hudson, Ohio in my adolescence, which has made me apt to adapt quickly to new circumstances. I am passionate about volunteering. My favorite organization I have been involved in is Soccer4All, where I help teach children with special needs and disabilities to play soccer.

Academics are also extremely important to me. I am used to putting in the work needed for difficult classes and assignments and am the first to help struggling students with their work.
