G.O.A.L.S

As a student at The Ohio State University, I am working to achieve the five core goals endorsed by the university: global awareness, original inquiry, academic enrichment, leadership development, and service engagement.
My plan to achieve the goal of global awareness, which involves finding value in diversity and people’s differences, is to study abroad. I want to travel outside the United States to find appreciation for different cultures, while enriching my experiences for my future career. I want to be an Optometrist, and I’m in the Pre-Health Club, which offers study abroad opportunities and shorter trips for pre-health students. If I am unable to fit travel abroad into my schedule, I can take part in a shorter immersion trip to learn more from people of different cultures.
Original inquiry is research related and involves work inside and outside of the classroom. For this goal, I plan to get involved in research with The Ohio State Optometry School. Ohio State’s Optometry School is involved in researching better solutions to eye care and is one of the top universities in research. I plan to involve my future career in my goal for original inquiry.
Academic enrichment involves the student in and out of the classroom, challenging themselves and working hard to prove academic excellence. I chose to be a biology major because I want to become an Eye Doctor and work in the medical field. I enjoy the difficulty of sciences, such as chemistry and biology and want to challenge myself. My goal is to work hard within my classes and to form positive relationships with my professors so that I can put myself in a position to do well in my classes.
Leadership development involves improving your personal leadership skills by getting involved in areas of interest to you and being active and engaged in what you’re doing. For me, my leadership style is more collaborative, where I offer my ideas and constructive criticisms in a group setting. I prefer enacting the ideas rather than brainstorming. For leadership development, I plan to get involved in things I’m passionate about and work with other people to organize proposed ideas. I think being a part of Pre-Optometry Club and Pre-Health Club are great starts to working my way up and possibly withholding leadership roles on their boards.
Service engagement is providing time, effort, and passion for the community. For this goal, I plan to get involved in the service opportunities provided by the Pre-Health clubs I am in and the many opportunities the University offers for service. I plan to get involved in a long-term service project and hopefully lead or create my own project that will be beneficial for the community.
