Year in Review (Spring Semester)

The spring semester of my freshman year has been a bit of a challenge. Just after the autumn semester, I had got surgery on my left ankle because I wanted to fix a condition that I was born with. Having that surgery really set the tone for the semester because of course it limited me from doing my normal activities. With me being down and out for most of the semester, it gave me a lot of free time because I wasn’t as active. So with that free time I spent my free time do what I had to do for school and making sure that my grades were in good standing. Normally people in my position would fall into depression and look at situations in a negative light, but as for me I didn’t. I looked at my situation in a positive light and used it to my advantage. One thing that recovery from surgery has taught me is that patience is key because good things happen to those who wait. I can honestly say that this had a huge effect on my semester. Moving on to the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars or DSWS. DSWS honestly helped me mature from a high school mindset to a college mindset. I say this because I honestly didn’t take school as serious as I should and they helped me realize that this part in my life is the most important time in my life. This is the time in my life where I should be making key connections that could help me during school and after graduation. It’s not what you know, it’s who you know. DSWS also helped me mature my collaboration skills, but not through group projects, but through recreational sports. They helped me realize that everyone has a role and as long as everyone completes that role, the team can and will be successful in whatever situation is at hand. Overall, I can honestly say that DSWS is one of the influences that helped me mature and make the transition into college. The picture below is my favorite one from this past school year.

About Me

Hi, my name is Jyvel Tolbert and I am from Cincinnati, Ohio. In high school, I was an excellent student. I graduated Valedictorian in my graduating class. Now here at Ohio State, I am a first-year student in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. I am currently an Athletic Training Pre-Major. I selected Athletic Training because I have a love for athletics, so I chose to go into the medical side of Athletics. I am also a Young Scholar on campus. In the future, I plan on graduating with my B.S. in Athletic Training, then head off to Graduate school to get my Master’s Degree for Athletic Training. On campus, I am very active, that’s obvious because I am a part of the Dunn Sport and Wellness Scholars. I have participated in multiple intramural sports during the fall, such as Softball, Basketball, Flag Football, and Soccer. I am really excited to continue my academic career at The Ohio State University.

Year In Review (Autumn Semester)

In my first few weeks of attending Ohio State, I have had a few memorable moments. Such as Buckeye Frenzy and attending the Ohio State-Oklahoma football game. Buckeye Frenzy meant a lot to me because I got to experience going into Ohio Stadium for the very first time. I even got to go on the field and experience what it is like to be on the field. I even took a picture with other students and made the “O” in the middle of the field. Then after that I took more pictures of myself on the field. Another reason why Buckeye Frenzy was memorable for me is because I got to meet new people on campus, plus I got a lot of free stuff. Such free t-shirts, coupons, and many more things. Now on the other hand, the Ohio State-Oklahoma game was memorable to me because I got to experience my first Ohio State football game. Even though they lost, I still had a good time. Another reason why this was memorable to me is because I got to hear all of the chants during the game, such as “O-H-I-O” around the stadium and the singing of Carmen at the end of the game. The most memorable part of the game was the halftime show. I was able to watch The Best Band In the Land perform and I got to watch them make the famous “Script Ohio”, which was great to see. Overall, in the first few weeks there were a few memories that meant a lot to me.

Artifacts

As stated in my other post, I have two memorable moments in my first few weeks on campus. From my first experience, my artifact is my picture of myself in the “O” in one of the end-zones on the football field. This picture came from my experience at Buckeye Frenzy. This picture is important to me because it signified that I have found my new home at Ohio State. It is also important to me because it is a memory of my first time being on the field in one of the largest stadiums in the nation. The picture also gives me a nice reminder that I attend The Ohio State University, showing me that I truly do attend one of the greatest institutions in the nation. My next artifact is from the Ohio State-Oklahoma game. My first artifact from this game is my ticket. This ticket is important to me because it signifies my first Ohio State athletic event, even though they lost it was still nice to attend the game. The game ticket also signified that I actually attended the game. My second artifact from this game is the jersey that I wore to the game. This jersey is important to me because it gives me a reminder of all of the Ohio State football games I went to, including the Ohio State-Oklahoma game. Overall, from my memorable moments in my first few weeks on campus I have multiple artifacts that bring great memories that I can remember for a long time.
