Project 2 Barriers

I made an installation piece that I was able to hang in my kitchen under a direct light source. This project was made out of a cardboard box, spanish-english dictionary, and various glue forms. This project turned out better than I thought it was going to because I was able to combine a couple different elements to really bring to life my chosen barrier. I used the light source of my kitchen to illuminate certain words as the box spun. While the box spun, dictionary terms were lit up one after the other to complete the message, “I spend my days dreaming of connection in a world I see myself in” and the spanish version said, “Yo paso mis dias sonar con un conexion en un mundo yo veo mi misma en” I thought this phrase would show the longing I have to move to Barcelona and be able to connect with the world and life that lives there. I also included 4 paper materials that make sound. This is meant to exemplify that without understanding, language is just noise without meaning. Placing these noise makers outside of the box helps prepare the viewer for the message inside and the struggles that follow when learning a new language.
