Fun Times with Pets

December 11, 2020 at 2:48pm by Zach Walton

Prepared by Danny Dotson, head of the Geology Library at The Ohio State University and subject librarian. Featuring Wilford, Jasper, Mikey, Marvin, and quite a few other pets.

Wilford the Cat: I’m Wilford, I’m the star of some slides being used in some classes.

Pets: Star?

Pets: Star?

Pets: Star?

Wilford the cat: Okay, so one of the stars. My fellow critters and I are featured in slides developed by my person, Danny Dotson, for two of his courses and even a presentation for class visits.

Wilford the cat: Why did he do it? Jasper the cat: Because we're cute!

Wilford the cat: Well that's part of it. But also, people like pets!

Wilford the cat: He had used fake people in some slides. He got tired of trying to come up with a variety of names and stock images.

Wilford the cat: So for one set of slides, he decided to use me to model the DO THIS behavior for success in his course. My son to model the NOT THAT behavior, instead of generic people. Jasper the cat: Mom, I have a name! I'm Jasper!

Wilford the cat: Then he expanded to using the other cats in my household for other content. Two new cats: Mikey! Marvin!

Wilford the cat: Then he thought to go hog wild. No, he didn't start including pigs. He asked his colleagues for pet pictures. All those other critters are from this request! Also, he got some pics of family pets as well.

Wilford the cat: Now in various slide shows, cats and dogs are the stars! They cover how to work with information resources and tools, learn more about the various formats, learn search strategies, and other information literacy concepts.

Wilford the cat: Oh, and students get involved. He's had students using their pets as the stars of some discussion posts. Even some creepy crawly animals are showing up.

Wilford the cat: This adds a bit of fun to the mix. We're cute. We teach some concepts. And students even get to talk about their own pets to showcase their understanding of concepts. How cool is that?

Wilford the cat: Tell us what you think of this. Have you ever considered using pets in your teaching? Also, if you know my person, tell him he needs to give me more chicken.
