G.O.A.L.S.

The University Honors & Scholars Center at The Ohio State University serves high-ability, motivated undergraduate students. G.O.A.L.S.

My Goals Statements: 

To me, global awareness is: knowing and understanding one’s place in respect to the rest of the world, but also taking time to be aware of other’s cultures and the state of the world. 

In order to further my global awareness: I hope to study abroad to better immerse myself in another culture. I am not sure yet where I’d like to go, but hopefully I can learn about not only another culture but also about problems that plague other parts of the world. Right now, I think I may want to go to Spain for my Spanish, but also because I would love to see the history that resides there. However, I may want to go to England instead. The culture there isn’t too different from ours, however, because I am a PPE major and PPE has its origins in England, that may be neat. 

 

To me, original inquiry is: being able to think critically and develop questions, as well as devising ways to answer such questions. 

In order to cultivate my original inquiry: I may want to participate in research. I am not too well versed in OSU research opportunities for me though, because until recently I had only believed that research was for the more science and math–based majors. This is of course silly, but I simply hadn’t considered it too much. I think I may want to participate in research through the political science department though, because I am going through identity politics right now, and I think that research is fascinating.  

 

To me, academic enrichment is: striving to ensure that one’s education is not only pushing boundaries for them academically, but also how they see the world by ensuring that education goes beyond the classroom. 

In order to grow my academic enrichment: I want to take more advanced course work and become very involved in my studies. I would like to pursue some sort of law, currently I’m thinking civil rights or immigration, but this requires years of study, and getting into law school is no small feat either. So, in order to prepare myself, I want to build up not only my professional resume but also my academics one to show my dedication to my education. Also, when going into law, it helps to become versed on a good many topics, so that I may be prepared to argue my case at all times. 

 

To me, leadership development is: honing your ability to guide and mentor others in order to uplift a team and further a mission. 

In order to better my leadership development: I hope to take on more leadership positions in clubs as well as take initiative in attaining my goals. It may require being pushed out of my comfort zone a bit, but it’s worth it. To be a leader though, also means being a good team player so I hope to further my ability to be on a team and cooperate with others towards a common goal. 

 

To me, service engagement is: working towards bettering the world around you through dedicating your time. 

In order to pursue my service engagement: I will involve myself with more service-oriented clubs. I hope to give back to the community by engaging in volunteer work through the school as well as my learning community. I may also like to seek out a regular volunteer position, rather than keep it to sporadic engagement. I want to dedicate my time though to a cause I am passionate about though, so I would have to do some research.
