Artifact 2

During the Autumn 2020 semester in my Fundamentals of Engineering 1181.2 course, I have begun to learn how to use MATLAB, a programming language widely used by professional engineers. Specifically, this artifact shows an example of one of the MATLAB class applications that I have completed for this course. In the example above, I have created a plot of sin(x) and sin(x)^2 from code entered above in a script file. Creating a singular sine graph from code may seem like a task of little significance but to me, being able to simply create this script file represents how much I am already learning in my path to becoming an engineer here at Ohio State. This application assignment is one of the many assignments I have completed that has jumpstarted my learning as an engineer. This is incredibly significant to me because it serves as a starting point from which I will be able to grow in my skills as a learner and an engineer in the future. By simply being able to produce a sine graph from code on my own, I have gained experience as a problem solver, and this skill will continue to grow as I progress further through my education here at Ohio State. In all, this class application proves to me how much I have already learned since beginning my college career in and represents how much more knowledge I will acquire in the coming years. I am truly excited to continue learning in such a way.

Artifacts

In the summer leading up to my senior year of high school, I completed my Senior Capstone Project “Planting with a Purpose”. For my project, I partnered with Brookwood Retirement Community to create a gardening club for the community’s residents. On Thursday mornings in July, residents, a couple volunteers, and I met to plant flowers around Brookwood’s pool deck. This was an amazing experience because, not only did I get to lead residents in gardening, but I was also able to help beautify Brookwood’s pool deck for future outdoor summer events. I could tell that the residents loved having us around to talk to and they loved getting to spend time outside. I got to know the residents I was working with very well, and I created memories with this project that will last a lifetime.

In addition to taking part in the service aspects of this project, I was also in charge of the logistical planning required to make “Planting with a Purpose” a reality. I began months in advance, meeting with my representative from Brookwood Retirement Community to discuss topics such as scheduling, budget, and sources of gardening supplies. I spent lots of time researching prices of supplies like planters, soil, and flowers, and found places where these could be purchased. This project is incredibly important to me because it is truly my own. I strengthened my skills in planning, communication, and time management through “Planting with a Purpose”, but best of all, I got to create valuable memories that will stay with me forever.

About Me

Hi, my name is Katie Tippenhauer! I am a first-year student in the College of Engineering Pre-Major Program, and I hope to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering. I am a member of the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars Program and hope to, in the future, be a part of the University Honors Program within the University Honors & Scholars Center.

In addition to hard work in the classroom, I am extremely passionate about service within my community. I was involved with several philanthropic service organizations during my high school career. I was very involved with a program called Youth Philanthropy Council (YPC) and with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Youth Philanthropy Council not only gave me opportunities to serve my community but taught me what it takes to support a non-profit organization. With this club, I had opportunities to talk to non-profit organization owners and learn much about the process of creating a non-profit organization. With St. Vincent de Paul, I was able to serve my community and help lead various events like food drives and toy drives. I plan to continue to pursue this passion of service and philanthropy throughout my college career.

I am incredibly excited to begin my career here at Ohio State!
