SL-EMS, or better known as Green Buckeyes, is all about in-person and digital community engagement and sustainability at Ohio State. During a typical week, you can find our staff tabling at residence halls and common spaces informing students on Ohio State’s recycling guidelines.
We also use our social media to inform students on all sorts of sustainability-related programming, whether they are run by the professors, undergraduate student government, or by one of our 30+ sustainability-focused student organizations. Feel free to contact us if you have a local sustainability event that you would like us to share!

The video above informs you on proper recycling rules for Ohio State and for the City of Columbus! Recycling rules can change from state to state, city to city so it is important to be aware of the proper recycling rules, wherever you are! Limiting recycling contamination goes a long way in helping Ohio State become a Zero Waste campus by 2025.

“Ohio is home to thousands of environmental professionals working every day to make the world a better place. The Environmental Professionals Network (EPN) is a service of the School of Environment and Natural Resources that connects and grows environmental professionals in-person and online.  Participants in the Environmental Professionals Network can access many online services and are linked to thousands of professionals in Ohio and beyond. Professionals are thus connected in a “community” of people who share their passion for our world and its environment, natural resources, people and communities — local to global. The EPN will help you grow professionally and be more effective in your job, and be inspired about your career.”

The Facilities and Operation Development’s  Recycling and Refuse Services Department  is committed to achieving The Ohio State University’s goal to achieve zero waste by 2025 by diverting 90% of waste away from landfills. You can help us achieve this goal by making sure only the correct materials are placed in recycling bins. In addition to collecting waste, recycling, and organics from campus, we provide a variety of services to minimize waste, including: recycling contamination presentations for students, faculty, or staff; adding compost operations for suitable buildings; and conducting building waste infrastructure assessments and waste characterization studies.

The Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC), an area of Recreational Sports and Student Life, strives to develop environmental ethics by connecting students to the outdoors. The OAC subscribes to Aldo Leopold’s perspective, mentioned in A Sand County Almanac and Sketches Here and There:
“Civilization has so cluttered this elemental man-earth relationship with gadgets and middlemen that awareness of it is growing dim. We fancy that industry supports us, forgetting what supports industry.”
Our goal is to shine light on the human-earth relationship by getting people outdoors and connecting them with the land. These efforts can come in the form of a one day river clean up by canoe on the Olentangy, a 25 day backpacking trip in the deep wilderness of the High Sierra Mountains, or providing a Bike Hub so that students can fix their own bikes. These projects serve a similar goal in helping people get outdoors, with the tangible extension being, those who value and are connected to the land are much more likely to care for it.

Opportunities available to students:
  • Rock Climbing free with your BuckID: belay instruction, harness, shoes, and helmets available for free.
  • Outdoor Gear Rentals: tents, sleeping bags, kayaks, mountain bikes, stand up paddle boards, and so much more!
  • Trips Program: Get outside on an adventure trip! We offer rock climbing, backpacking, caving, whitewater rafting, and many more! Learn more about our International Trips and STEP Signature Projects here!
  • Clinics Program: Learn a new skill!
  • Outdoor Leadership & Team Building: build-up your group and/or team’s leadership and skillsets!
  • Buckeye Bike Hub: Bring your bike in for a spring tune and fresh parts!

“The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center focused on five sustainability goals: Facilities, Information Systems, Nutrition Services, Environmental Services, and Human Resources. While these goals and their corresponding strategies specifically targeted the unique opportunities to further sustainable practices throughout the medical center, they are also aligned with The Ohio State University’s overall vision for sustainability. Our accomplishments are grouped according to the medical center’s Strategic Plan goals: Healthy Communities, Research, Resource Stewardship, Talent and Culture, Education, and Healthcare Delivery.”
