Drawing the world around us

Field near Possum Run, Richland county, Ohio, gouache on masonite, 3″ x 7″

Columbus airport, Ohio 2019

A five inch by eight inch gridded sketchbook is my go-to for life drawing on the fly…And by life drawing I mean real life…not drawing from photographs. While traveling abroad, sketching and drawing require that I slow down a bit and savor experience in a way that taking pictures with a camera does not.  Many of these were completed in airports or public spaces (pre-Covid of course).

My neighbor the bullfrog.  Beautiful animal.  Brush and walnut ink with white ink corrections.

Ohio Bird Sanctuary, Seymour, charcoal pencil and watercolor on cardboard, 14″ x 18″

The Ohio Bird Sanctuary in Richland county has welcomed my students over the years by allowing us to do studies of their birds.  Seymour is a popular subject.  He’s not much on flying because of a bad wing, but he’ll stare you down like a boss.
