Microbiology Unknown

During microbiology, we learned about many of the differential tests one could administer to an unknown bacteria strain to determine its species and strain. At the end of the year we were given a number of species and tasked with determining two unknowns given that they were both part of the group. This project taught me how to think scientifically and to think for myself how to work through an issue. Upon completion in the lab, we were required to write our own lab report, one of the first true lab reports I have been tasked with writing, which ‘threw me in the deep end’ but taught me numberless intricate details about what all goes into taking scientific findings and credibly and effectively showing the rest of the world those findings.

Organic Chemistry

Over the past year, I have ‘stumbled’ through both sets of organic chemistry classes at OSU, it was a very difficult time, given the global pandemic circumstances but I made it through and learned something along the way. Everything I do during my time in college should be purposeful and should be helping me to reach the next big goal, it should build on top of each other. I learned that I just did not like chemistry as much as I had previously believed. When I learned this for myself, I opened up my eyes to the thousands of routes I can take and which ones would help me the most by not only building my knowledge, but piquing my interest and keeping myself engaged in and out of the classroom on my long journey forward. I decided after this past difficult year to leave the Chemistry department in study something more interesting , history. I believe that this well rounded outlook for my future academics will help me to better differentiate my science classes from my history classes, placing the information on two different levels, prioritizing them equally but treating the information differently, interest and career.

Statement of Action

I plan to go to medical school, through local volunteering, extracurricular leadership, undergraduate research, and proficiency in each class and capacity I am placed.

Abstract

On this set of pages you will find various posts, all of which relate to my time at OSU, what got me here, and how I wish to use this time to prepare myself for the future job market. My artifacts include important events, classes, and awards that specifically impacted me. The career tab is full of professional experience and skills that I have gained through coursework and extracurricular clubs and work. My GOALS are the various capacities that I can use my undergraduate time to impact my professional future or the community in which I live and how I plan to accomplish them. Year in review is simply looking, a semester at a time at the impact that each aspect of my life had on changing the 6 months younger version of myself into me, and what accomplishments I have made.

Now finishing up my sophomore year, I can see that I have grown substantially. I have maintained a GPA of 3.518 throughout both sets organic chemistry, alongside numerous major classes. I have also learned how to prepare myself for tests and exams, something I could not say of myself two years ago. Outside of academics, I have found a couple organizations for service involvement, as well as, numerous connections to the various professors and overall colleges and programs here at OSU. Alongside my time working at Dining Services on campus, where I have further developed my leadership and teamwork skills, as well as my time management skills, I believe I have well-rounded myself in preparation for my future endeavors.

Welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio

I am an undergraduate freshman here at The Ohio State University. I am currently a member of the biological sciences scholars program and am pursuing a B.S. in Biology as well as a B.A. in Chemistry. I plan on using this degree to get into medical school, where I hope to gain the knowledge necessary for me to become a cardiovascular surgeon.

My first semester of college, I have spent much of my time adapting to the new world that is my home for the next four years, or more. I’ve gained a lot of connections, whether professional or as casual as finding new friends. Another large chunk of my time has been spent trying to keep up academically, which has gone so well so far. I’ve been dying to find different capacities in which I can make myself useful, through both service back to the community or involvement in OSU organizations. I have found one organization that has given me lots of close connections, as well as numerous service opportunities helping primarily elderly members of a local church with yardwork throughout the year. One of these opportunities, helping a lady named Bonnie Bean,  proved that nothing feels better than helping out your fellow man just to see the smile on their face. I have changed accordingly and have kept up with everything happening around me, hopefully that will continue throughout my time at this university.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: I plan to volunteer in the third-world at a point either during my undergraduate or afterwards during medical school. In this setting I plan on helping in whatever way needed, whether that includes building a new school in a small community or helping to administer vaccines to those who can’t otherwise get themselves.
  • Original Inquiry: Though I’ve already been involved in REP research for psychology, I plan on extending my knowledge of the science field by getting involved in a research lab during my sophomore or junior year of my undergraduate program.
  • Academic Enrichment: During my years in school, I have always pushed myself to do my best, I will continue to pursue this goal throughout college by attending office hours when possible and sitting at the front of the classroom in order to maintain good standing with my professors and with the university in respect to my grades.
  • Leadership Development: I have already become an influential member of a church organization off-campus, but plan to reach for leadership positions within intramural sports and in clubs, likely with a medical outlook to them.
  • Service Engagement: I plan to become a regular volunteer for the Wexner Medical Center or possibly the James Cancer Center, hoping to give back to the community at least a little in what ways I am able.

Career

I am a motivated sophomore at the Ohio State University majoring in Biology. I currently have two jobs, and hoping to use my experience to get into a research lab on campus. The traits that will help me reach my goals are my resourcefulness, leadership and teamwork skills, and proficiency in any capacity in which I am placed.

During the past 12 summers of my life, I was privileged enough to attend FHCYC, a church camp that with spiritual guiding also taught me valuable leadership and teamwork skills. My two most recent summers I was recognized as the most advanced camper in reference to bible knowledge. The central trophy signifies my leadership and team working skills that were among the most advanced among the other campers for my final year as a camper. These trophies remind me of all the skills, knowledge, and memories that were cultivated in me at FHCYC over the past 12 years.
