Artifacts

One item I would consider to be an artifact from this semester is my first lab report for chemistry. Although I had done many lab reports before in AP chemistry, it had been a few years and I again had to realize how much work goes into a single report. This first lab report was kind of the first slap in the face I got starting college because I held it off until the last minute and stayed up until 2am working on it and was then exhausted for my 8am lab that morning. Though I regret my procrastination, I think it definitely taught me to start on assignments early so that the proper time can be put in, but it was my first achievement because finishing that lab report felt so rewarding seeing all my work come together.

About Me

I am a first year student and am planning on majoring in biology. Throughout high school, my favorite courses had always been my science classes and what solidified my choice of majoring in biology was taking AP biology my junior year and was one of the first time I had truly enjoyed going to class everyday and learning more. A large portion for what helped prepare me for my first semester of  classes was the many AP courses I took throughout high school and the rigor it held, which previewed me for the amount of dedication I would have to have to be successful in those courses. In addition, participating in cross country all through high school helped teach me dedication, responsibility, endurance, and the time management that will be essential throughout my academic career. Coming into OSU, I had planned on going on the pre-med track; however, I have come to stray from that and am currently planning to continue with my biology major, but plan to specialize in forensics and also major in criminology as well. Forensics and criminology have always fascinated me and I hope to pursue a career in these fields after having gone to graduate school to further my education.

Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

Global Awareness: To achieve this goal, I will participate in a study abroad program where I will be able to immerse myself into another culture and also learn about their values and traditions while also receiving an education. In addition, I will increase my knowledge of other cultures by taking courses that will help increase my global awareness.
Original Inquiry: In order to achieve this goal I will participate in research that relates to my major of biology, and hopefully be able to find a research project that may relate to forensics in some way. To prepare myself for such research, I will do all I can to understand the work that is being done, its purpose, and any necessary background information, so that the experience can benefit all parties mutually.
Academic Enrichment: To increase my academic enrichment, I will not only be a diligent student in the classroom, but also outside of it. I will participate in programs that will enhance my understanding of what I’m learning in the classroom and further engage me to go deeper into the content. Through programs such as study abroad, I will be able to use my knowledge in other areas outside of the standard classroom setting.
Leadership Development: In order to develop my leadership skills, I will participate in extracurricular activities and decide which ones are the most important to me and try and work my way up to hold a leadership position. Through having experience as a leader in this type of activity, I will be better prepared for future career opportunities.
Service Engagement: To achieve the goal of service engagement, I will participate in service opportunities that are beneficial not only to who the service is being performed to, but also myself in increasing my awareness of others and help better educate myself. To do so, I will pick opportunities that may relate to my field of study, something related to biological sciences. Through these opportunities, I will further my own knowledge and understanding of concepts that would not be attainable in the classroom.
