Semester in Review

As finals approach, my first semester as a freshmen at The Ohio State University comes to end. This semester was an experience that i will not be forgetting anytime soon. The transition from my small Christian high school to a large University was a challenge, but was the right decision.  I joined clubs like the pre-vet club and the animal behavioral and welfare club, which provided me opportunities to expand my animal knowledge while meeting like-minded people. Some of classes were harder than others, for example, my Chemistry 1210 class required more of my attention than my Calculus 1151 and Animal Science 2100 classes. Biological Science Scholars was a wonderful commitment and gave me the knowledge and opportunities I need to be successful. The semester was in no way a walk in the park, but I have become more independent and resourceful over the past months. I look forward to my next semester at The Ohio State University and to more than just survive life, but thrive and become the best me I can be.

The Wilds located in Cumberland, Ohio is a non-profit conservation center for a multitude of animals

Through a Biological Science Scholars event, I traveled to Cumberland, Ohio to The Wilds. On the tour I was able to see amazing animals that are excint in the wild or endangered. Since, I dream of being a Veterinarian this experience was inspiring. There is no substitute for the knowledge and the enjoyment that was gained on this trip.

fullsizerender-3 On June 26, 2015 at the Tsongas center in Massachusetts, I attended The Congress of Future Medical Leaders through the National Academy for Math and Sciences. This once in a lifetime experience was a span of three days starting at 8 am and ending around 12 am. There were world renown speakers such as: a Nobel Prize winner, The cast of the documentary Code Black, and Bo Eason. Other speakers included medical school deans, motivational speakers, and other scientists. Not only did the delegates, the students who were invited, get to watch Code Black, but also a live surgery. It was a Cardiothoracic  surgery focusing on the lungs to detect cancer. The whole experience was an incredible opportunity and through the event I was inducted into The Torch and Laurel Society.

Global Awareness: Students have the opportunity to appreciate diversity and other cultures differences.

  • In order to appreciate diversity and be more globally aware, I plan to study abroad in South Africa. The Animal Science Department has a study aboard program in South Africa where one gets to observe animal behavior on a safari.

Original Inquiry:  Students learn and take part in the  research process  ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative  projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community.

  • I most likely will do research through the college of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and it will most likely be with the Animal Science Department.

Academic Enrichment:  Students pursue academic excellence through higher level curricular experiences beyond the university normal both in and out of the classroom.

  • I want to try to be an Honors student at some point. As well as expanding my academic career and go to Grad School.

Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.

  • I want to be on the executive board of the Pre-Vet club and I am a member of The Torch and Laurel Society.

Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.

  • Through the Pre-Vet club i am volunteering at the Ohio State Vet School in the oncology and small animal ICU for an hour a week each. I also volunteer back home at Fox Valley Wildlife Center, so I plan to get involved with shelters and wildlife centers in the Columbus area.

About Me

IMG_0341My name is Victoria Thompson and I am a freshman at The Ohio State University from Geneva, Illinois. My plan is to major in Animal Science on a Pre-Vet track. I have grown up around all types of animals and have always dreamed of being a Veterinarian.  I am  a smart, determined, passionate, and well-organized woman who loves helping others. Over the years, I have volunteered at animal shelters, wildlife centers and shadowed at vet clinics, as well as having a job as a Pet Counselor at Petland. I want to encourage others to be themselves and follow their passions like I plan to. For an assignment, I wrote a children’s book and visited different elementary classes reading to children. I also love to travel, learn new things and meet new people.
