Mask Up

Project Statement

I created these two masks based on the bubonic plague that happened in the mid-1300s. I wanted my masks to be a present-day representation of how it is presented today. I took a more poetic approach to the bubonic plague mask, and turn it into a Mardi Gras mask but still have the beak from the original mask attached and part of the mask. My goal was to make color the dominant factor in my mask and make them big and bold using feathers and glitter on one. I chose to make two because I couldn’t decide which one best represented my concept which was Mardi Gras so I decided just to add feathers to both and keep both.

Reflection

What I learned during this project was more about the Bubonic Plague, also I learned more about how the mask developed over time, also along with the reasoning behind the original mask and the current ways they use the mask today. I learned more about Mardi Gras and learned about the different varieties of Mardi Gras masks that are seen, the three main colors they use in each mask, and what they represent. In the project I also learned how to make macrame, it was used on the wooden dulls to give my project texture, and a different look.
