My name is Emily Thomas and I am a first year student at The Ohio State University. I am currently a Pre-Education major with the intention of pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education. I have grown up in Columbus, Ohio, meaning I have been born and raised a Buckeye. My education prior to college has consisted solely of private Catholic schools, so coming to college has been an extremely enriching and positive experience. During high school I took many Advanced Placement classes and challenged myself academically. I always strive to be the best I can be, and my dedication to academics will carry with me through college.
Throughout my time at Ohio State, I plan to focus on my studies and become involved in service and leadership opportunities on campus. In high school I was heavily involved in service activities such as mission trips, food drives, and tutoring. I have become involved in service events this semester through the Advocates for Children and Education Scholars Program, and I plan on continuing service throughout my time at Ohio State. I believe that service is vital to both the person serving and the person being served because a new perspective can always be gained. I am also very passionate about the arts, particularly about dance. I am a firm believer that the arts are a vital part of education because it encourages creativity through movement and expression. I believe that every child is capable of learning and success, and the arts are a prime example of innovative thinking and individual success.
In terms of professional goals, I am aiming towards a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, possibly with a reading endorsement. I also have a personal connection with people who have special needs. Therefore, I want to give back to an organization such as the Childhood League who gives children attention and opportunities that they would not get otherwise.
Throughout my education thus far, I have had the privilege of learning from dedicated and motivating educators. The educators that I admire the most are those who have instilled in me the need for curiosity and creativity, the desire for excellence, and the passion for learning. I believe these educators are the most inspiring and successful because they are able to grow both intellectually and personally along with their students. I have always loved the idea that there is always knowledge to be gained, and that growth can never stop. In my lifetime, I hope that I am able to give children a solid foundation of what it means to learn and be curious, and ultimately make a difference in the lives of children.
