Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

I plan to increase my Global Awareness by applying the things I will learn through my Popular Culture major. I hope to not only study and understand the common culture of the United States but of the whole world as a whole. I would like for this to be done by taking a look at music, movies, and literature. Along with this I plan to take American Sign Language and while this may not broaden my understanding of foreign culture as much as other foreign languages I hope that it will allow me to empathize and understand with the deaf.

For Original Inquiry I would like to channel the majority of my creative efforts through film and stand up comedy. I joined the Buckeye Stand Up Club and have gone to several open mics and showcased my set at one of the shows. I will continue to write for this and when I get more comfortable with time management next semester I will become a more active participant in a film club where I can write and work on films. I would like for my Popular Culture minor to help me with these particular efforts.

All of my courses either relate directly to my career aspirations or my creative ones. My philosophy course has allowed me to think critically about many moral and life questions and has given me a plethora of material to write about. Public Speaking will make me more confident both professionally and creatively. Calculus and my CSE class are directly preparing me for my career as an Actuary.

My involvement with the stand-up club has been helping me greatly with my leadership skills. By becoming more comfortable on stage and speaking in front of crowds of people I will be much more prepared when it comes to presentations and the like in the professional world. This confidence will transfer over when I need to take charge and direct a group of people in the direction that I want them to go.

When I master certain subjects I plan to devote that knowledge to tutoring other students and helping them with classes for services purposes. I would be really interested in joining the Buckeyes for Mentoring Club and helping people out. Also the Buckeye Stand Up Club plans for all the proceeds of the year’s final show to go to charity.
