Interview with Clara Hach

9-22-2020

12:30-12:45

Me: Where are you from?

Clara: Concord (near Cleveland), Ohio.

Me: What year are you?

Clara: I’m a 3rd year PSL member.

Me: What is your major?

Clara: My major is Public Policy.

Me: What would you like to do with your degree and major? Like what career would you like to pursue?

Clara: I would like to work for the Department of of Interior for policy regarding the preservation of national parks.

Me: Did you know that you wanted to pursue this career prior to PSL or did you want to pursue this career because of PSL?

Clara: Honestly, I knew that I wanted to pursue this career before joining PSL.

Me: Did you know right away that you wanted to be in PSL?

Clara: No, not originally. I wanted to be in Mount Leaders Scholars Program or in the Arts Scholars Program. However, I was assigned to PSL, and it ended up fitting my major really well, allowed me to stay in Smith-Steeb, and meet some of my closest friends, so it turned out really well for me.

Me: How would you describe PSL to those who don’t know what it is?

Clara: A bunch of students wanting to learn about politics.

Me: How has being in the PSL Scholars Program impacted your college experience?

Clara: It allowed me to meet new people and some of my closest friends. Like five of the eight people I live with are from PSL.

Me: What advice do you have regarding the mindset one should have while being in PSL?

Clara: Meet as many people as you can. It’s really important to build connections.

Me: What was your favorite part/aspect of PSL?

Clara: When we had an immigration lawyer talk to us about her everyday work was like and the challenges that she has to face on a daily basis. Also, I’m more into the Society and Law aspects of PSL and not so much the Politics.

Me: What classes have been your favorite so far at OSU?

Clara: Mythology, G.E. History of Communication, Figure Drawing, and Geology and national parks.

Me: What made you decide that you wanted to go to OSU?

Clara: The John Glen College of Public Affairs.

Me: What aspects are different for a 1st year vs a 3rd year PSL member?

Clara: 3rd year requires less involvement and more mentoring; whereas, 1st year requires a lot more involvement.

Me: What is a current issue that you’re passionate about?

Clara: California and west coast wildfires. Overall, the protection and preservation of land.
