Module 7: Motivation, focus, and/or well-being

This week is our last week of the semester. As students finish up classes and finals, I feel as though this module greatly sums up everything that I learned in this class. These three things: having motivation, finding a focus, and maintaining your well being are all arguably one of the most important factors that make a good and healthy student. Being able to find a focus or a goal while you’re in college will help your learning experience. Knowing what your working for, whether it be as big as graduating, getting an interview, going to graduate school, or getting a job and visualizing that goal will help you work for that goal. Having smaller goals in mind as well can also help motivate you to do your best each day, week, month, or semester. Staying motivated while in college can be hard sometimes especially when you have long lectures, essays, homework, and research going on all at the same time. What keeps me motivated to work hard is the rewards I would give myself if I had a good week/ kept to my schedule. This can also be helpful when it comes to maintaining your well being while in school. Making sure you don’t just only think about school but also be able to keep a healthy school-life balance will help you in the long run.

Module 6: Searching and researching

In today’s lesson, we will be discussing what searching and researching really mean and how we can be better at it. When we search for information, we are looking for specific information or facts about a certain topic, whereas when we are researching we are looking for more than just facts, but rather a deeper knowledge and understanding in the area of research. In college, you will have to do both of these things for most of your assignments. When doing a search on a topic, it typically falls under a right or wrong answer and involves a simple question. Research questions differ by involving less of a yes or no answer, but more of an elaborate answer. When doing both researching and/or searching for information, we want to keep in mind that one of the key things we must make sure to do is making sure the sources we use are credible. We do so by making sure they are reliable. We do this by checking who wrote the source, has it been peer-reviewed, does the author have credentials. Then we can check if the source contains quality information. Is the information up to date and is it consistent. Lastly, we use the source to help your paper.

Module 5: Web-enhanced listening and viewing strategies

Hello, in this lesson we will be discussing how students can enhance their listening and viewing strategies in a web-based environment. Right now many elementary, high school, and college students have transitioned from the traditional classroom setting to an online virtual setting. Because of this attendance may not be required for all classes, and so students may not feel as though it is necessary to attend classes in real-time. Even though the option to not attend class is available, I believe it would be beneficial to the students to do so. Professors notice who and who isn’t attending class regularly and can make a note of this. Other reasons to attend class even in an online setting would be to be able to take notes that the professor provides, but also other information that may not be available in the general notes provided for the class i.e. examples, announcements, explanations, etc. This brings me to one of the most important learning strategies provided for this week which is being able to take good notes for class. What you learn in the classroom and the notes you can make or break how successful you are in your classes, so enhancing your note-taking skill is very beneficial to you. Spending less time on the number of notes and rather focusing on the quality and key points of the information you jot down can enhance your note-taking skills. Investing in note-taking apps such as Livescribe and/or notability can also be beneficial as well when it comes to storing and recording lectures and notes.

Module 4: Web-enhanced reading and study strategies

Hello, this week we will focus on learning how to enhance web reading and study strategies. This is a key part in doing well for your college classes since most of the material you will be given you will need to read and research on your own. A few important notes that I have taken with me from this week’s module is that practicing additional tasks such as note taking, highlighting, summarizing, and  quizzing yourself after reading can help keep the ideas you have read over in the text in your memory. Another key point in the lesson we learned this week is being able to use memory as a foundation for strategic studying. In order to become successful in retaining information, we should understand the science behind memory. Everyday choices such as your sleeping habits, exercise, and breaks can all affect your ability to learn. As college students, we sometimes neglect these areas in our lives because of the sheer workload or stress that sometimes comes with college and/ or university. However, neglecting these things won’t help you truly become successful in your class if you are looking to be able to remember the information covered in the long run. Keeping a healthy balance of school, sleeping schedule, and eating habits all contribute to your ability to memorize and learn.

Module 3: Time management and productivity

Hello again, in this week’s lesson we will be talking about time management and productivity. When it comes to time management, it’s important to note that this is not something that you need to be good at just for school work/ college. This is a practice that will be important to carry on all throughout your life and making a good habit of being able to manage your time as early on in life would be beneficial in the long run. Personally, I don’t have the best practices when it comes to this topic however, some of the tips that we learned in this week’s lecture really helped when it came to being able to manage a lot of the work I did this week. One of those tips was being able to visualize the end goal (like gaining good health if you’re trying to eat healthier, or a better GPA at the end of the semester) and working for that end goal as if it was given to you right this second. Visualizing and working for a goal that can be given to you today can be easier to work for compared to a goal that you may not see the end results of until later down the line.

Module 2: How to communicate and collaborate on the web

Hello, as a current student here at OSU I would like to share some helpful information and tips to any incoming students that can be beneficial to them on their college journey. This week in my ESEPSY class we focused on being able to communicate and collaborate on the web. A few helpful points I found that could be very useful for incoming students to know is that 1. When you’re communicating online to whomever it may be such as another student or professor is to never assume they will understand your usual or “at home” style of writing and to always keep it formal, detailed, and to the point. What I mean by this is to avoid writing your emails like you’re texting a friend and to try to avoid using all caps as people can misunderstand you. 2. Make good first impressions with your professors. This may be hard right now as we are going through a pandemic so many classes have been forced to be conducted through the web, it’s still very important to make a good first impressions and a few ways you can be able to do so is by making sure the format of your emails are correct, introduce yourself, using proper grammar and spelling, and to make sure you use the correct title for addressing them (such as Dr. if they are a Dr.).
