Design Project Assignment 6: Concept Ideation

Step 1 – Sorting:

  • Nunchuck with buttons on the side
  • The keyboard on top of a rotating ball
  • A device that is on the table (Triangle one)
  • A USB port with cords coming out for each console
  • Formable Controller (Moldable)
  • Add a strap to the controller
  • Joystick (shaped like a T)
  • A stand for your phone and an app for the controller

Step 2 – Building Ideas/Variations:

Tyler Altschul

  • For the nunchuck, you could have detachable buttons on each side depending on which hand the person uses
  • For the joystick, you could put the buttons under the circle of the top because that’s right where a persons’ fingers would normally be

Will Roberts

  • USB Port – Instead of having a lot of cords compatible with all consoles, have the port box be BlueTooth and have a cord connect to the controller.
  • Formable Controller (Moldable) – Send a formable mold to the customer in a sealed bag and have the gamer form the controller to their hand – wires will be inbox inside the moldable material.

Sam Brandeis

  • The keyboard on top of the ball – The keyboard goes side to side for lateral movement and backward, but for forwarding movement and shooting there is a “gas pedal-like” device that you push down with your foot
  • Add Strap to Controller – For the one-handed, there will be an adjustable strap attached to the wrist to make sure of grip

Tim Garb

  • Phone stand and controller app- for this you can add in a wireless charger into the phone stand, keeping the user’s device charged while playing.
  • Tabletop device- could have modular buttons and button caps so each user can put the buttons wherever is most ergonomic for them, as well as allowing them to have more buttons attached if wanted.

Step 3: Choose Concepts for Prototyping:

  1. Nunchuck Controller
  2. Joystick
  3. USB Port
  4. Phone Stand
  5. Table Top Device

Step 4: Create Detailed Drawings:

Nunchuck Controller

Joystick

USB Port

Formable/Moldable Controller

Table Top Device

Step 5: Team Reflection:

When completing this activity our group thoroughly enjoyed completing this activity. For all of us, it was our first time creating a new product from our minds and experiences. This was a very rewarding experience creating something new for a group of people who are forced to live with this challenging disability. I believe that working as a team has both its positives or negatives. The positives being that we get to share and express the ideas with our group to understand if they make sense. It also allows the group to combine ideas and rework our = ideas into better ones. The negative when working together as a team when generating concepts is that when we started discussing ideas together that limits everyone’s creativity as you get influenced by others’ ideas. While working on this assignment we found it a little challenging to come up with some ideas as controllers don’t =differ in shape. Working in a group and just brainstorming on the whiteboard helped us think of ideas as well. Drawing the objects was a good way of brainstorming because it allowed us to visualize what the controller would look like. It is very tough to do because of the limitations a controller must have such as being able to be used by someone with one hand, being portable, and not too complex. Another thing that is a factor in making the product is the production of the product. It is hard to fit all the buttons necessary for a controller in the space that one hand can reach without having too much stress placed on it. If we’re to make this assignment different I would remove the limitation of a product for amputees to an open option because that would allow more creativity to explore a product we have more interest.
