Detailed Drawings and Team Reflection

Thomas:

This device is meant to make putting in contact lenses easier for users with only one arm. As shown in the first image, it will utilize a small rubber suction cup (diameter ~1-2 inches) which allows the device to be mounted to various surfaces. It will have a bendable metal coil (5 inches fully stretched) made out of recycled metal which allows the user to manipulate the device in any way to help them. It will also have a metal ball at the end (diameter 1 inch) made out of recycled metal where the contact is to be placed, allowing the user to gently put their eye onto the contact.

This image shows how the bendable metal coil is also collapsable allowing it to be more portable and easier to carry around.

This last image shows the inside of the metal coil. Running through the coil will be a small pipe that will be filled with contact solution which is to be dispersed onto the metal ball at the end so the contact is clean when it is applied to the user’s eye.

Here is a upper view on the watch stand attacher. The idea that we added was unable to be drawn in, but we made it so it would be able to work with already-existing watches, as opposed to being tasked with designing an entirely new watch. However, we would include a magnet attachment that would replace clamps.

By adding this additional feature, this would ultimately reduce hassle and allow for users to have optimal time management, especially during a time-controlled area of the day.

On the top left are options for sizes for detachable arm. On the top right are options for shapes for detachable arm. The bottom image shows the arm being used and attached to a person. Going further I would go into more in depth description of how the hand operates, but I have focused on arm shape, size, and color at this time. The option to have the arm would allow people to manage their time more, but also having the arm adjust size would be easy on their wallets because they wouldn’t have to buy a new one every few years (particularly for kids when they are growing up).

A new variation that we added was a portable, cordless charging station for the flat iron. This is the front view of how it would sit on a vanity or desk. The buttons on the flat iron enable the user to set a predetermined time and temperature. The pre-set time will prevent the user from leaving the flat iron on which could lead to a potential fire hazard and also force the user to stay on time while getting ready in the morning. The pre-set temperature will also increase safety and time by not having to mess with it during the process.

By eliminating a cord and using a portable charging station, it will help reduce time finagling with technicalities in the morning. The base is heavy enough to keep the flat iron grounded safely, but light enough that the user will be able to take this on the go or whenever they travel. There is a digital image of what the percentage is at, and a USB type slot to plug in the actual flat iron.

Andrew:

This is the front view. It stands about a foot tall with the horizontal arms around 6 inches. The base is weighed down with a circular metal plate located inside the plastic base.

This is an up-close of the hinge joint one of the horizontal arms. The joint allows for the arms to rotate and the arms are extendable allowing the user to adjust the hook however they see fit. The hook itself is also on a hinge allowing the user to open and close the hook.

This is an example of the user using the hair hook.

Team Reflection

Working in the group setting gave us the opportunity to come up with more variations of product ideas to help solve our issue. Every person performs their morning routine in a different way so being able to have multiple people brainstorming allowed for us to come up with more ideas. Having a variation of people that come from different settings also allowed for us to improve upon the ideas that each of us had originally. We now have improved variations of our original ideas that are more carefully articulated. Specifically, each person has been able to go into detail of the product they were fascinated by the most. Therefore, it was easy to enjoy the process. Some issues we had, especially in the drawing phase, is truly showing someone how each product operates. For instance, the detachable arm is easy to explain, but this specific arm is slightly different than people may anticipate so having a prototype in hand would be a lot more beneficial. Overall, thinking about the progress of this project we all agree that we have found pretty interesting ideas to tackle. In fact, when we began this project for the class we wanted to focus on yard work tasks and we are all happy that we came to terms with working on getting ready in the morning because it is a much more necessary and common concept to focus on. We all get ready in the morning and it is important for someone to do that in a timely manner without having to stress out. All in all, the project so far has been enjoyable for all of us and we have been able to work hard and combining our creativity and put it to good use. When specifically talking about this assignment, it has been our favorite so far.
