Teaching Information Literacy Course (Ohio State Participants)

The Teaching Information Literacy Course is a self-paced, fully online course available to instructors, librarians, instructional support staff, and graduate teaching assistants at The Ohio State University. Developed by the University Libraries, the course provides support for purposefully and strategically integrating information literacy into courses across the curriculum.

Course participants will:

  • Develop an expanded understanding of information literacy as a concept
  • Explore how the purposeful teaching of information literacy skills and concepts can improve student learning
  • Use the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education to identify gaps in student knowledge related to research, scholarship, and information use
  • Create an Information Literacy Action Plan, outlining steps for integrating information literacy into a course or instruction session

Course Description

Teaching Information Literacy is offered through CarmenCanvas. The course consists of six modules:

  • Module 1: The Information Environment and Information Literacy
  • Module 2: The Framework for Information Literacy (Part 1)
  • Module 3: The Framework for Information Literacy (Part 2)
  • Module 4: Identifying Learning Bottlenecks and Learning Outcomes
  • Module 5: Information Literacy Assignments, Activities, and Assessments
  • Module 6: Information Literacy Action Plan

Each module is designed to take approximately 2 hours to complete. Overall, it is estimated that the course will take 12-15 hours to complete. Participants can complete the modules at their own pace, leaving and returning to the course as often as needed.

The major project for the course is the creation of an Information Literacy Action Plan where participants develop their ideas and next steps for incorporating information literacy into a course, unit, or instructional session. The action plan is completed in stages as participants move through the course. A template and instructions will be provided in the course and a course facilitator is available to answer any questions and provide additional support.
