Teaching Information Literacy Endorsement

The Teaching Information Literacy Endorsement was developed by The Ohio State University Libraries. The goal of the endorsement is to help participants to purposefully and strategically integrate information literacy into courses. The endorsement is open to all course instructors, librarians, graduate teaching associates, and instructional support staff at Ohio State. (Note: If you are not affiliated with Ohio State, please review the guidance on the Teaching Information Literacy Certificate).

To earn the endorsement, Ohio State-affiliated participants must complete at least 12 hours of programming related to information literacy. There are several available options:

  • Option A: Participants can complete a self-paced, fully online course in CarmenCanvas. Participants can enroll in the course at any time. For more information on this option, see: Teaching Information Literacy Course.
  • Option B: Participants can attend/complete multiple synchronous (virtual via Zoom) and on-demand (via CarmenCanvas) information literacy workshops. For more information on this option, see: Teaching Information Literacy Workshops.
  • Option C: Participants can complete the online Teaching Information Literacy course as part of an cohort. The cohort option is offered 1-2 times per year. For more information on this option, see: Teaching Information Literacy Cohort. (Note: The next cohort will likely begin in Autumn 2024. To indicate interest in joining the cohort, email hammons.73@osu.edu.)

For all three options, the final requirement is the submission of an Information Literacy Action Plan. Information on the Action Plan for each of the options is provided on the page for that option.

Applying for the Endorsement

Eligible (Ohio State affiliated) participants who complete any of the options above can apply to receive the Teaching Information Literacy endorsement from the Drake Institute for Teaching and Learning. For more information about the endorsement program, go to: Teaching Endorsements.

After completing the requirements for the selected option and submitting your Information Literacy Action Plan (either through the course or directly to the endorsement facilitator), you can submit your endorsement application to the Drake Institute through the Teaching Endorsements page. See the information under Steps to Complete a Teaching Endorsement.

You will need to submit responses to two competency based questions and one reflection question. You can review the questions and criteria here (in the Curriculum and Course Development section): Questions and Response Criteria. You are also encouraged to review the recommendations for completing the response.
