Year in Review

[ “Year in Review”  is where you should reflect on the past year and show how you have evolved as a person and as a student.  You may want to focus on your growth in a particular area (as a leader, scholar, researcher, etc.) or you may want to talk about your overall experience over the past year.  For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. G.O.A.L.S.

[ “G.O.A.L.S.” is a place where students write about how their planned, current, and future activities may fit into the Honors & Scholars G.O.A.L.S.: Global Awareness, Original Inquiry, Academic Enrichment, Leadership Development, and Service Engagement. For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Delete these instructions and add your own post.

Global Awareness: Students cultivate and develop their appreciation for diversity and each individual’s unique differences. For example, consider course work, study abroad, involvement in cultural organizations or activities, etc .
Original Inquiry: Honors & Scholars students understand the research process by engaging in experiences ranging from in-class scholarly endeavors to creative inquiry projects to independent experiences with top researchers across campus and in the global community. For example, consider research, creative productions or performances, advanced course work, etc.
Academic Enrichment: Honors & Scholars students pursue academic excellence through rigorous curricular experiences beyond the university norm both in and out of the classroom.
Leadership Development: Honors & Scholars students develop leadership skills that can be demonstrated in the classroom, in the community, in their co-curricular activities, and in their future roles in society.
Service Engagement: Honors & Scholars students commit to service to the community.]

Career

[“Career” is where you can collect information about your experiences and skills that will apply to your future career.  Like your resume, this is information that will evolve over time and should be continually updated.   For more information, go to: http://honors-scholars.osu.edu/e-portfolio. Negative impacts of the Three Gorges Dam

Green Engineering Scholars final presentation project

In my Green Scholars group consisting of Kyle Burrows and Prithvi Das, we were tasked to research a topic surrounding a “green” engineering field. This could include energy efficient devices or creations that effect the environment/life that it is located by. My group decided on the negative impacts of the Three Gorges Dam, the largest hydro-powered dam in China and the world. The dam has been one of the most controversial engineering feats of the century and we decided to take a deeper look into the negative side of the dam. Through research, we learned of not only the pollution that came from the dam, but the effects it had on people. Many citizens who lived in the area the dam would be built were forced out and had to live far away. They were not given any compensation or replacement jobs by the Chinese government that forced them out and that resulted in problems not only economically but psychologically as well. This project was useful to me as I understood what issues can come from engineering projects and how people and the environment around them can be disregarded in favor of the project. This knowledge of issues can help me if I ever had to come up with a project, as I know that projects can lead to issues for people as well as the environment they live in. I would have to find a way to remedy any issue that could arise or simply decide to not do the project as the negative outcomes may out weight the positives and if that is the case, moral ethics should dictate me to not create the product, as I know the issues the Three Gorges Dam caused in its environment and the people who once lived there.

About Me

I am a rather modest guy from a rather modest city of Berea, Ohio.  I like many things such as sports (particularly football and baseball), games (be it board games or video games), television/movies (Gladiator and Forest Gump to name few), and comedy. Recalling my time in high school, I had many good experiences  such as completing a four year engineering program through project lead the way and completing/received college credit through college level AP courses starting in the 10th grade.Through my time in high school, I had shown excellence (when I applied my self) in the field of math and sciences. Due to my known successes in these areas, I had the idea of pursuing an engineering education once I entered college. My academic goals at Ohio State is to earn a respectable GPA (I am far from perfect but as long as I can have a reasonable grade point average when I finish college, I will feel satisfied that I was capable of complete college better than average) and to potentially achieve a masters degree. I do not plan to do work outside of school during my time at college (I’ll focus solely on my courses I am taking). I’ll will need to do quite a lot of classes to achieve an engineering degree, and as my future courses get more and more difficult, I will need to make sure I completely dedicated my time and effort into them so I can achieve my goals I have set for myself.
