Chicago Steppin’

On February 24, 2019, I was invited to dance in the Heritage Ball All-Star Challenge for the dance I partake in, Chicago Steppin. Chicago Steppin’ is a dance that been around and grown for many years. I started dancing when I was 11 turning 12 as my mom had started taking classes. I got really invested in the dance, and began attending workshops, showcases, competitions, etc. I have gained a facebook following from those in the community, as videos of me dancing are posted every once in a while. I have enjoyed dancing over the past six years, and I hope to continue during my free time in college. I have learned a tremendous amount about this dance and the people who were there when it was new. Being invited and attending the All-Star Challenge in Atlanta this past February was a huge honor for me, because it showed how much of an impact I have made on the community by being a youth in this dance. I have been told that the youth that partake in Chicago Steppin’ have given hope to legends that this dance will live on. That is what I strive to do, is keep the dance and its history alive in the future.
