Artifacts

The artifact I am choosing to be representative of my academic interests and achievements throughout my time at The Ohio State University is the graduation tassel I received on the first day of college. On the first day of college, every freshman was given a tassel. As explained by President Drake, the tassel is representative of a transformative time period as an undergraduate student and it stands as a symbol to motivate me to reach my goal to graduate and eventually become a Veterinarian. I decided to hang the tassel above my desk in order to constantly ackowledge that there is a light at the end of the tunnel no matter how hard the assignment is that I must complete. I learned that this artifact is merely a minor step in my life as I plan to continue onto graduate school and into the job force in the future. However, it is extremely important as it reminds me that I am a few steps from reaching my goal and to take each step one day at a time.

About Me

Hello everybody!

My name is Natalie Tarbuck and I am a freshman at The Ohio State University. I grew up in Broadview Hts, Ohio a suburb 20 minutes from Cleveland. My intended major is Animal Bioscience with a minor in Epidemiology. My dream has always been to attend Ohio State to pursue a career in Veterinary Medicine. I am super passionate about animals and love all the things that they have to offer. In my spare time, I love to go on hikes with my dog, exercise, and go out with friends! My goals as an incoming college student are to excel academically and socially in order to fully take advantage of the college experience. I hope to meet amazing new people and learn all about the field of Veterinary Medicine.

Year in Review

During my transition into college life, I hoped to not only excel in a new academic environment, but I also hoped to learn to be independent. I have enjoyed my journey trekking across campus to find lecture halls, meeting new people, living with a roommate, completing late night assignments, and getting involved by joining clubs and extra curriculars. Entering college, my goal had been to excel academically in my Animal Bioscience major and Epidemiology minor to pursue my dream of becoming a Veterinarian. I focused on finding great opportunities that would allow my dreams to become a reality.

I am excited to say that I have received an Animal Science Undergraduate Research Position for this upcoming summer. Such an opportunity means the world as it also allows me to get an idea of a career in research, while also supplying me with experience in an animal industry. As veterinary school is very difficult to get into, my plan B career option would be to get my masters in epidemiology. This career field is a heavily research based position. All in all, I have had an amazing first year at The Ohio State University and am beyond excited to see what comes my way next.

G.O.A.L.S.

  • Global Awareness: Ohio State is an extremely large and culturally diverse university. In order to engage in such diversity my first year, I took Yiddish 3399. This course focuses on reading and analysis of texts, films and music pertaining to the topic of the Holocaust. In the future, I plan to study abroad and take additional general education courses to stay involved.
  • Original Inquiry: I find internship and research an extremely beneficial opportunity before entering into a career. This year I was presented with an amazing opportunity to apply for an Animal Science Undergraduate Research position. Despite a small chance of receiving the position as a first year student, I was granted the opportunity to research protozoal and bacteriological infections of the gut this summer.
  • Academic Enrichment: I challenged myself as a first year student to take courses such as CHEM 1220 and Organic Chemistry 2510. I also worked very hard in some of the first year animal science prerequisites. Outside of the classroom, I sought to join clubs such as the Pre-Vet club and find a job, while also managing my rigorous academic schedule.
  • Leadership Development: A leader can be anywhere. My association to leadership was in my job as a lifeguard for the university recreation department and as a fellow Scholars student.
  • Service Engagement: To engage in service, I spent much time working at the small animal ICU, Steps for Sarcoma, Garden of Hope, and various sporting events when on break back in my hometown.
