Welcome to my Honors & Scholars e-Portfolio

This picture was taken at the Rutgers vs. Ohio State game on October 1st, 2016. Prior to the game, we had gone to the biological science scholars tailgate at Raney. During this event, we bonded as scholars of the same community and were able to relate over being a Buckeyes fan. The event was very fun and many of the scholars attended to be able to communicate and bond as people in the same community.

Year in Review

Semester 1 in Review

Looking back on this past semester, and comparing myself before college to myself one semester into it, I realize how much I have changed considering the new responsibilities and obstacles I have encountered. Before I came to Ohio State, I had different study habits, social habits, and expectations. Although maybe not all of my educational expectations have been fully met, I know that I have changed and will continue to alter my habits in order to accomplish what I wish to. Personally, I think I have matured a lot, especially when it comes to fulfilling certain responsibilities that I did not have during my high school career. In my opinion, I have my priorities in line and am doing what I can to enforce certain rules that I grew up with on myself so it stays like that. On a professional note, I am doing my best with my time management in order to be involved in the Scholars program and participate in any events that I am interested in. Additionally, I have started to think about getting involved in research, but I have not acted on anything so far. I believe that as long as I try my best with the finalization of my grades the end of the semester, I will look back on the past couple of months as a great start to my college career here at Ohio State.

G.O.A.L.S.

As I begin my journey as a biological science scholar here at Ohio State, I recognize that there are certain efforts I must put forth in order to obtain experience and results in each category of the G.O.A.L.S. The “G” in G.O.A.L.S. stands for global awareness, in which students learn to recognize the differences in cultures around the world, as well as expose themselves to lifestyles different than their own. This is an area that might be difficult for me to gain experience in since I do not plan to study abroad. However, many of the general education classes I plan to enroll in have to do with learning about other cultures and will help me dip my toes into various ways to get involved with cultural organizations that I otherwise wouldn’t consider. The “O” in  G.O.A.L.S. means original inquiry, which translates to involving oneself in research opportunities on campus. In order to obtain results in this category, I plan to actively look for research opportunities that have to do with the veterinary medicine field and/or with professors who have experience in that field. I hope that research experience will add to my resume and build upon many helpful academic experiences to come in my future at Ohio State. The “A” in  G.O.A.L.S. stands for academic enrichment in which students engage themselves in rigorous courses while excelling in the classroom. As a biological science scholar, many of the courses I will take will be science related. These courses will require lots of dedication and hard work, and contribute to my own academic enrichment. The “L” in G.O.A.L.S. stands for leadership development, where skills as a leader shine in one’s classes, extracurricular activities, and in the community. One way I plan to achieve the leadership requirements at Ohio State is to work my way up the ladder of the veterinary clubs that I join, and hold a high ranking position by the end of my four years here. Finally, the “S” in  G.O.A.L.S. stands for service engagement which requires time contributions to community service organizations. I will achieve this by not only eventually accomplishing my required 10 hours of service per semester, but I will reach above and beyond to dedicate a good portion of my time once I can manage time wisely to community service. Overall, all of these ambitions will bring me to achieving optimal experiences and  G.O.A.L.S. at Ohio State.

Artifacts

This first artifact is dedicated to the animal shelter in Illinois that I used to help out at. The experience made me want to dedicate my career to helping animals and make sure they live healthy and happy lives. I grew as a leader with people and organizational skills because lots of the volunteering required interactions with adults more than with the animals, as well as making sure certain things were completed by the end of the volunteering event. Overall, the experiences I had while volunteering at this animal shelter helped shape me as a person and develop my general skills.

About Me

My name is Jordyn Tapas. I’m from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, which is about 45 minutes northwest of Chicago. I am a biology major on the pre-veterinarian track. There is a long history of medical careers in my family, and that has inspired me to follow my relatives’ footsteps into a career that helps others and makes the world a healthier and happier place. I’ve had pets around all my life, and as a result, I have always wanted to help people take care of their animals to provide the best life possible for them. I would like to obtain some kind of internship position with the Veterinary Medical Center to begin my experiences in the field I wish to pursue. I cannot wait to begin striking down on all of the opportunities at my fingertips here at Ohio State to help me achieve my goals, which is why I decided to join the Biological Science Scholars.
