Module 7: Keys to Motivation for Online Learning

From week’s 7 module, one useful thing that I have learned is falling asleep faster and sleep more soundly. I believe some of us have trouble when it comes to falling asleep due to daily stress or bad sleeping habits. After going through slides 26 and 27, I learned a few ways to fall asleep as fast as possible, such as aim for a consistent bedtime and wake time, develop morning and nighttime routines, create a no-technology buffer, and do not let my class schedule dictate when I wake up. I actually find it hard to aim for a consistent bedtime and wake time because I have more assignment on certain days. For days when I have no dues, I tend to spend time with my friends and will sleep very late. Similarly, I tend to sleep early if I have a morning class. If my class starts in the afternoon, I will let my body wakes me up naturally. I am quite interested in trying out the no-technology buffer before bedtime method. I think I should utilize the night mode function on phone and laptop so that the blue light will get filtered and melatonin production will not decrease. I hope I will be able to fall asleep faster and sleep soundly as sleeping is an essential part of life.

Module 6: Searching and Researching

In this week’s module, I learned about how to search for my research question and what should be expected. When I was learning from this week’s module, one thing that I find most useful from it is the boolean logic. The boolean logic teaches us how to search on any search engine effectively. At first when I watched the video, I was very confused and had to watch it a couple of times to understand it. Basically, when you are trying to find your research question on any search engine, we should take out the keywords from the research question and find it in different words to have various results. This way, it would be easier for us to search and be able to obtain different sources on our research question. This could be put into practice in order to help us do our research paper in the future. I would definitely recommend this strategy to other students. Every one of us will have to do a research paper in the near future and we have to find reliable sources. With this strategy, students will be able to find sources faster and have more information to read or cite on their paper. Below is the link of the video:

Module 5: Web-Enhanced Listening and Viewing Strategies

From week’s 5 module, one useful thing that I have learned is taking notes the effective way. Sometimes when I take notes in lectures, I tend to miss out a few key information that is given by the lecturer although I am giving my full concentration in class because of not writing it down fast enough. One tip that the video from this week’s lesson was recording the lecture. However, some classes in Ohio State University does not allow students to record the lecture and this is a problem for me. One way to solve this is asking the lecturer for permission. I believe that the lecturers in Ohio State University are very helpful when the students are having trouble with the course and would try to help the students as much as they can so that they will ace the course. Another lesson that I think is important is that we should review our notes after classes and organize them carefully so that it will be easier for us to review it in the future. These are the important lesson that I have learned from this week’s module. I would like to encourage other students to try out these methods if you are having trouble writing down notes in lectures.

Module 4: Web-Enhanced Reading and Study Strategies

The most important thing I learned in Module 4 is the principles for effective study group. I believe we have all dealt with unresponsive and uncooperative group members who are not contributing to group study or project. After watching the video titled “Do Not Settle for Mindless Highlighting” by Professor Stephen Chew, some rules that I learned on slide 7 are setting a goal and agenda, setting criteria for participation, and keeping the ultimate goal of learning in mind. Everyone should come prepared and ready to contribute. For instance, everyone should have completed all assigned readings, reviewed notes, and wrote out at least three potential questions that are ready to ask during the group study. Members play a vital role in an effective study group. Everyone can ask and answer questions and any member can express the group understanding. In order for everyone to learn the most out of group study, I think it is better to not split up any work. Group study for math class would be an ideal example. Everyone could take turn review and going over the problems but they should do all of them. Moreover, conflicts can happen in a study group as everyone contributes different ideas and opinions. Thus, it is important to recognize the conflicts and resolve it as quick as possible. Everyone has to decide early on ways to handle disagreements and decision-making.

Module 3: Efficiency in the Digital Age

This week’s module was very interesting to me. I have learned quite a few interesting strategies that could help me overcome time management issues. On of the most important lesson I have learned from this module is procrastination. I have never thought of how procrastination came about and affect us on the tasks that we set to achieve. Nevertheless, after reading the slides provided from this week’s module, I learned about the root causes of procrastination and why we as students procrastinate when we do our schoolwork.

Some techniques I have learned from the videos that are included in the slides are the ten minute rule, three magical questions, and ultimate goal vs immediate desire. These techniques I believe are very useful and could help me overcome time management issues now and later on in life. One example from the techniques I have learned is making a list of where I stand now before completing the task and where I stand after completing the task. This would motivate me to complete the task faster because I would imagine myself enjoying after I finish completing the task. One advice I would like to give out to other students would be to try some of these techniques that I learned from this week’s module if you too have trouble when it comes to procrastinating. These techniques will save you time and you will be able to do much more with the extra time.

Module 2: Communicating and Collaborating

In this week’s module, we learn about communicating online in various ways and collaborating with tools from the internet. From my perspective, I have learned many things, however, the most useful thing I learn from this module is netiquette. At first when I look at the title I was confused about it because I have never heard of the word “netiquette” before. So I went to search the meaning on google and watch the video that was attached to the slide. After searching for the meaning and watching the video, I finally understand what it means and realize the importance of netiquette. For those reading this blog that does not know what netiquette means, it means the acceptable way of using the internet or how we behave online. There are many reason why is it to have an important netiquette but the most obvious and important reason is to maintain a good digital reputation and not offending other online users. After learning this important lesson, I tend to apply this knowledge on my education and work. One good example that I can apply this knowledge on my education and work would be replying my lecturers or higher-ups with the right behavior. One good tip that I would like to give out for students would be to do some research on the proper way to email their lecturers before writing and sending them out. I have seen emails that are sent to lecturers that is not formal and in my opinion it is rude. And lastly, be polite when you ask questions from your lecturers.

Video above is the lesson that I learned from this week’s module.
