Professional writing minor internship

This is a site provided by the OSU English department to outline the “professional writing minor internship.” The page can be found under the “pick your minor” tab under the “undergraduate” drop down. The page does an excellent job of addressing topics such as the benefits of the internship, and what organizations a student can intern at. Overall, I don’t see any disadvantages to this page, the main questions a student may have are addressed.

A contributor to Glassdoor, a job search site, has put together an overview of ways to improve your professional writing skillset. The author is Mary Walton, who specializes in teaching business writing. The article outlines 8 tactics to improving your professional writing, ranging from “know your facts” to “always edit and proofread.” Having been written in 2017, this article is very applicable to professional communication today.

Perdue University faculty member Debra Davenport has put together a very informative article on the importance of good writing skills. The article can be found under the MS in communication tab of their “online programs.” In her article, Ms. Davenport seeks to underscore why clear and effective writing skills are important for one’s professional growth. Rather than just giving advice by topic, Ms. Davenport uses real life examples to make her point.  One of the greatest advantages of this article is her use of real life examples, which helps give the reader a greater appreciation for developing better writing skills. The downside of the article, though, is that it really doesn’t go in depth on HOW to fix the issues that she examines.

For someone who is interested in a career in professional writing, they would be wise to consider “technical writing.” In this YouTube video from 2017, Oregon State University teaching faculty give an overview of what technical writing actually is. The two faculty members seek to give the viewer an understanding of technical writing, the job description of a technical writer, and what one needs to learn to become a technical writer. This is an excellent resource to learn about technical writing. The only disadvantage is that this video solely focuses on technical writing, therefor the viewer must understand that this is only a piece of professional writing, and not indicative of all professional writing.

This article stands out from the above resources as it does not specifically reference professional writing. That does not mean it is not important or relatable, though. The 2017 Harvard Business Review article, written by JM Olejarz makes a very compelling argument for how liberal arts are important for the growing tech industry. For someone interested in English, or professional writing, give this article a read. JM Olejarz sets out to dispel the idea that liberal arts majors art shut out from the tech industry. In fact, he outlines reasons why the liberal arts, i.e. English, will be important for the industry to continue to thrive and develop. The advantages of this article are numerous, the main one being that it offers a new and refreshing perspective of a liberal arts degree. The only disadvantage is that it does not specifically site “professional writing.”
